Jenna Fischer was talking about acting—not a real-life romance with John Krasinski. In a Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, she described the unusual intimacy of playing Pam Beesly opposite Krasinski’s Jim Halpert, then made the distinction clear: “But in real life, we are just friends.”
What did Jenna Fischer mean by “the strangest thing”?
Fischer used the phrase to describe having a long-term fictional love interest while playing Pam on The Office. Her character’s relationship with Jim required a convincing emotional connection over the course of the series, even though that connection belonged to the characters and the performance.
In the Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Fischer explained: “It is the strangest thing to have a long-term fictional love interest. It’s a type of relationship that is very intimate, and it’s very powerful, but it’s fictional. I mean, there is a part of me that is Pam, and there’s a part of him that is Jim, and that part of me is in love with that part of him. But in real life, we are just friends.”
Were Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski together in real life?
No. Fischer explicitly said that she and Krasinski were friends in real life. Her description of feeling in love was about the part of her inhabiting Pam and the part of Krasinski inhabiting Jim—not a claim that the actors were romantically involved.

Why did Jim and Pam seem to have such strong chemistry?
Fischer’s account of the casting process offers context for the characters’ on-screen connection. In an earlier Fresh Air interview, she recalled that the finalists for Pam and Jim were paired in camera tests over two days. She said Krasinski told her, “you’re my favorite Pam. I hope you get this job,” and she replied that he was her favorite Jim and that she could not imagine anyone else in the role. Fischer also recalled that the casting team told them it thought they had “amazing chemistry.”
That recollection describes their audition and the casting team’s response; it does not change Fischer’s distinction between the characters’ romance and the actors’ friendship. The account appears in another Fresh Air interview.

Later coverage has revisited Fischer and Krasinski’s chemistry, but it should not be read as evidence of an off-screen relationship. Bravo’s page about Fischer discussing the chemistry offers a short clip description rather than a full transcript, while an Office Ladies transcript of a later interview with Krasinski documents cast discussion of the show and Jim and Pam’s story. Neither supplies a basis for overturning Fischer’s direct statement that she and Krasinski were friends in real life.
