Jen said the claim about her husband Zac’s family had spread after she made it on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives; Zac, meanwhile, said the connection was a family joke. The show’s account and the couple’s later comments do not establish a verified family tree.
What did Jen Affleck say about being related to Ben Affleck?
In the first season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Jen said her husband, Zac Affleck, was related to Ben and Casey Affleck. The relationship was described as Zac’s father being the actors’ second cousin. That was the show’s account, not a documented genealogy.

In a May 9, 2025 interview with People, Jen said “people ran with it” after she made the claim. People’s exclusive, syndicated by AOL, framed her comments as setting the record straight.
Why did Zac Affleck call the connection a joke?
Zac disputed the family relationship. Us Weekly quoted him saying, “That is not true,” and reporting that he had understood the story as a joke. TV Insider later summarized his explanation as a running family joke.
#1 Best Overall
These are conflicting accounts of how the claim arose: Jen initially described a family connection, while Zac said the story was not true and had been treated as a joke. Neither account, on its own, proves the family tree.
What did Jen say after the claim spread?
In a May 2025 Us Weekly interview, Jen said she was “still just confused” and “still shocked” that there was no biological connection. She also joked that they needed a 23andMe test; the coverage did not report that a test was taken.
Us Weekly’s May 10 report covered Jen’s reaction, while its May 17 explainer recapped what Jen and Zac had said.

The reviewed coverage does not provide primary genealogical records confirming a biological relationship, nor does it independently resolve the family tree. The most accurate answer is therefore that Jen once described a connection through Zac’s father, Zac disputed it as a joke, and no verified relationship is established by those reports.

Later in 2025, Jen and Ben appeared together in a Dunkin’ commercial. That public appearance is pop-culture context, not evidence of shared ancestry. Elite Daily’s September 15, 2025 coverage reported on their exchange during the ad.
