Love in the Future ranks as John Legend’s best-selling album in the available multi-country sales compilation, with Get Lifted a close second. The figures are reported estimates, not a newly audited lifetime tally, and the ranking is incomplete: it covers only five albums from Legend’s current catalog.
John Legend’s albums ranked by reported sales
BestSellingAlbums.org’s artist ranking, updated February 14, 2023, places these five albums in descending order. The totals combine country-level reports; the source does not establish a common measurement date across all countries. The first two album pages were accessed in 2026.
| Rank | Album | Reported copies | Scope and source detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Love in the Future (2013) | 2,515,000 | Reported across eight countries; BestSellingAlbums.org also reports 2,000,000 copies in the US and US 2× Platinum certification dated March 22, 2022. Album sales page. |
| 2 | Get Lifted (2004) | 2,432,500 | Reported across six countries; the page also reports 2,000,000 copies in the US and US 2× Platinum certification dated October 13, 2020. Album sales page. |
| 3 | Once Again (2006) | 1,227,500 | Artist-level ranking total; country breakdown not stated on that ranking. Artist ranking. |
| 4 | Evolver (2008) | 1,090,000 | Artist-level ranking total; country breakdown not stated on that ranking. Artist ranking. |
| 5 | A Legendary Christmas (2018) | 500,000 | Artist-level ranking total; country breakdown not stated on that ranking. Artist ranking. |
The compilation’s reported totals put Love in the Future 82,500 copies ahead of Get Lifted. That is the margin between the figures in this source, not proof of an exact, current difference in lifetime sales.
Why Get Lifted has a conflicting worldwide total
A Sony Music announcement in 2008 described Get Lifted as having sold “more than three million copies worldwide” (Sony Music, 2008). That dated label statement is higher than BestSellingAlbums.org’s 2,432,500 estimate. The sources do not explain the difference in scope, date, or counting method, so the figures should remain separately attributed rather than combined or treated as a definitive lifetime count.

Sony later gave a specific launch-week figure in its November 22, 2024 anniversary announcement: “Get Lifted entered the Billboard 200 at #7, selling 116,000 copies its first week, Legend’s first Top 10 debut.” That is a reported first-week US figure, not another cumulative worldwide total. The announcement also covered the Get Lifted (20th Anniversary Edition) and a 3LP physical edition (Sony Music, 2024).

Multi-country sales estimates
The ranking above uses source-reported cumulative estimates assembled from country figures. The available pages do not name an independent third-party methodology that audits those totals. Treat them as a way to compare the compilation’s reported numbers, not as universally comparable or independently verified lifetime counts.

US certifications
Both top-ranked albums are listed as US 2× Platinum, with different certification dates and 2,000,000 US copies reported for each on their album pages. The RIAA describes its Gold & Platinum Awards as a program that honors and tracks sound-recording sales (RIAA Gold & Platinum). A US certification is a useful US-market indicator; it is not a worldwide sales ranking or a substitute for the multi-country estimates.
Chart performance
Chart position and time on a chart describe how an album performed in a particular chart and territory, not how many copies it sold. The Official Charts Company records UK album chart histories for Legend releases including Get Lifted, Once Again, Evolver, Wake Up!, and Love in the Future (Official Charts Company). Those histories offer UK chart context, but chart peaks and longevity should not be read as sales totals.

Why this is not a complete ranking of every John Legend album
Legend’s official catalog lists eleven albums spanning 2004 to 2026 (John Legend’s official music catalog). The sales compilation does not report comparable figures for every title in that catalog, so the five entries above are the albums with reported totals in its ranking—not a complete, current ranking of all releases.
Scope also matters: Wake Up! is a collaborative album, while A Legendary Christmas is a holiday release. A list limited to solo studio albums would use a different inclusion rule. The available compilation includes A Legendary Christmas but does not provide comparable reported sales for every other catalog title, including Wake Up!.
