Johnny Cash recorded the performances that became At Folsom Prison at California’s Folsom State Prison on January 13, 1968. Columbia released the album on May 1. Its history turns on more than the setting: the prisoners’ audible responses became part of the performance, while Cash later described why he wanted to play for a prison audience.
When and where was At Folsom Prison recorded?
Cash and his accompanying musicians recorded at Folsom State Prison in California on January 13, 1968. The released album draws selected performances from two shows held that day, rather than documenting only one concert. The official Johnny Cash album account and the Library of Congress account place the recording at Folsom and describe the two performances.
Cash’s later recollection contains a date discrepancy worth keeping visible. In a 1997 interview archived by Fresh Air, he recalled the group going to Folsom on February 11, 1968. That conflicts with the January 13 date supported by the official album page and the Library of Congress; January 13 is the date to use for the recorded concerts.
Why did Cash want to perform at a prison?
In the Fresh Air interview, Cash said he wanted to record a prison performance because of the response he had received when performing in prisons. He also recalled discussing the idea with Columbia producers. This is Cash’s retrospective explanation of his motivation, not a complete account of every decision behind the recording.

The audience was not simply a backdrop. Its reactions can be heard throughout the released performances, making the people in the room participants in the album’s live sound. The National Archives’ exhibit on the concerts draws on journalists’ eyewitness memories and photographs, while the Library of Congress provides institutional context for the album’s place in recording history. Neither source warrants assigning a particular thought or feeling to any individual listener.
Who performed and made the record?
Bob Johnston produced At Folsom Prison. The official album and Legacy Edition credits identify Cash alongside June Carter, Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers and the Tennessee Three. The group’s credited members were guitarist Luther Perkins, bassist Marshall Grant and drummer W.S. “Fluke” Holland.

At Folsom Prison joins a carefully selected album sequence to the unpredictable sound of a live audience. The two-show source material, the prison setting and the prisoners’ audible reactions all shape what listeners hear. That combination makes the record both a performance by Cash and his musicians and a document of an event whose audience was present in the sound, not erased by the recording.
