John Cena announced on July 6, 2024, that 2025 would be his final year competing in the ring. His farewell ended with a final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The announcement concerned his in-ring career—not a departure from WWE altogether.
When did John Cena announce his retirement?
Cena made the announcement during a surprise appearance at WWE’s Money in the Bank event in Toronto on July 6, 2024. Speaking to the audience, he said, “The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 elimination chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, Wrestlemania 2025 will be the last Wrestlemania I compete in.” He followed with, “I want to say thank you.” CBS News reported his remarks.
At the post-show press conference, Cena clarified that he meant to end his in-ring career rather than leave WWE. “People say they’re walking away, and two years later they come back. I want to set the record straight right now, I’m done. This is it,” he said. CBS reported that he assured fans he would remain part of WWE as a performer’s career ended. CBS News
What did Cena’s 2025 farewell involve?
WWE described the plan as retirement from in-ring action following The Last Time Is Now John Cena Farewell Tour. The year-long tour included stops at WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam. WWE’s announcement also noted that Cena had more than 65 million social-media views for his retirement announcement in its first 24 hours; that figure is WWE’s own reporting, not an independently verified measurement.
