John Mulrooney, the stand-up comedian, actor and television and radio host, died at 67 on December 29, 2025, at his home in Coxsackie, New York. Reports published in early January said he died suddenly; they had not identified a cause of death at that time.
Who was John Mulrooney?
Born August 27, 1958, Mulrooney built a career across stand-up comedy, acting, television and radio. The Television Academy identifies him as a stand-up comedian and actor and records his passing on December 29, 2025.
He performed in comedy clubs and became a familiar television presence through hosting and guest-hosting work. His career also included radio hosting and acting appearances.
What shows did John Mulrooney host?
Mulrooney hosted the comedy showcase Comic Strip Live. He also guest-hosted The Pat Sajak Show and Fox’s The Late Show after Joan Rivers left the program. His work on The Late Show was a brief hosting stint, not a long-running tenure.

Obituary coverage also describes his later work in public service: he joined the Coxsackie Police Department at 52 and served until 2024, according to Chortle and The Daily Beast.
When and where did he die?
Mulrooney died at his home in Coxsackie, New York, on December 29, 2025, aged 67. The date is listed by the Television Academy; contemporaneous reports also gave his age and location, including TV Insider.

Was a cause of death announced?
Reports published in early January 2026 said Mulrooney died suddenly at home and that no cause of death had been released. The Daily Beast and TV Insider both reported that the cause was not known to them at publication. Those reports do not establish whether further information has since been released.

Chortle reproduced a sentence it attributed to Mulrooney’s official obituary: “John Mulrooney will be remembered as much for being a loyal friend to countless people as for the laughter he brought to a multitude of strangers.”
