John Krasinski did not say he would never play Mr. Fantastic again. In December 2022, he said there had been no discussions about continuing after his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and described that role as a cameo. Later, Pedro Pascal was announced as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps; that casting does not rule out every possible future appearance by Krasinski.
What John Krasinski said about returning
In a December 13, 2022 interview during the Jack Ryan Season 3 press day, TheWrap asked Krasinski about continuing as Mr. Fantastic. He replied, “There aren’t any discussions at all,” adding that the only discussion had come in the second-to-last week of Jack Ryan, when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige asked him to fly to Los Angeles and “play in our sandbox for a day.” Krasinski said, “I was honored to do it.” TheWrap’s interview report said he went from Budapest, where he had wrapped the series, to the Doctor Strange set.
In a separate interview published the same day, Hindustan Times asked about the possibility of returning. Krasinski answered, “To be honest, I don’t know. To me, it was just a cameo.” He also described Feige’s invitation as a request to do the cameo for a day shortly after he finished Jack Ryan Season 3. Hindustan Times reported the exchange.
Why “no discussions” does not mean “never”
Krasinski’s remarks describe what he knew in December 2022: there were no continuation discussions at that time, and he understood the appearance to be a one-day cameo. They are not a permanent refusal or a confirmation of a future role. The available statements leave open whether Marvel might approach him again.

His scene also involves a particular version of the character, not a definitive end to every possible Reed Richards story. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Krasinski plays Earth-838’s Reed Richards, a member of the Illuminati; that variant is killed in the film. A character’s death in one universe does not establish what happens to other versions.
Who plays Reed Richards in the newer Fantastic Four film?
Associated Press later reported that Pedro Pascal would play Reed Richards in the film that became The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The announced principal cast also included Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. AP’s cast report establishes that Krasinski was not the announced Reed Richards for that film; it does not resolve whether he could appear in a different Marvel project.
