Joe Biden’s first family
Joe Biden married Neilia Hunter in 1966. Their children were Beau, Hunter and Naomi. Shortly after Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972, Neilia and Naomi died in a car accident. Beau and Hunter were critically injured and survived. The official biographies from the White House and the White House Historical Association document this chronology.

Jill Biden and their daughter, Ashley
Biden married Jill Jacobs in 1977. Their daughter, Ashley, was born in 1981. Jill Biden has described her experience of building a family in her memoir, Where the Light Enters: Building a Family, Discovering Myself; the White House Historical Association biography identifies the book as her memoir.
His grandchildren and great-grandchild
The Joseph R. Biden Jr. Presidential Library biography reports that Joe and Jill Biden have seven grandchildren. The page does not provide a complete verified roster, so the count is more reliable than trying to list every grandchild from older biographies, which reflect an earlier point in time. On January 8, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden Neal gave birth to a son, William Brannon Neal IV, making Biden a great-grandfather. That dated report establishes the birth, but it should not be read as a complete, current roster of all descendants.
