Joe Biden’s April 26, 2024, live interview with Howard Stern ranged from his childhood stutter and early political career to the 1972 car crash that killed his first wife, Neilia, and their 13-month-old daughter, Naomi. Biden spoke about the family members who helped him through that loss. The interview was billed as a special live appearance by a sitting president; the available written accounts establish the grief story, but not the precise visual reaction described by the phrase “holds back tears.”
What happened in Biden’s Howard Stern interview?
Biden appeared on a live, special edition of The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM on April 26, 2024. SiriusXM had announced an expected start at approximately 10:15 a.m. ET; the contemporaneous White House pool report recorded the interview beginning around 10:18 a.m. and ending at 11:31 a.m. ET. SiriusXM’s announcement and the White House pool report archive document those details.
SiriusXM presented the appearance as a special live conversation with a sitting president. That description does not establish that it was the first time a sitting president had appeared on Stern’s show, so it is more accurate to call it a notable live interview than to claim a historical first.
Why was Biden described as holding back tears?
The interview’s emotional center was Biden’s account of the 1972 car crash that killed Neilia and Naomi, who was 13 months old. In the official show recap, Biden recalled the devastating loss and said his family helped him carry on. SiriusXM’s recap described him as “shattered” while recounting the story. The phrase “holds back tears” describes a reaction to the footage, not a conclusion established by the written recap or pool report. Those sources support the context—Biden’s account of grief and family support—but do not independently verify a specific facial expression or emotional state. The full video is the appropriate source for viewers who want to judge his visible reaction for themselves.
What did Biden and Stern talk about?
The conversation combined personal history with political topics. SiriusXM’s recap highlights Biden’s upbringing, accomplishments since 2020, early political life, and his response when Stern asked about debating Donald Trump. The pool report also notes discussion of airline cancellation refunds, Biden’s public-defense work, his childhood stutter, and meeting Neilia Hunter Biden. The White House pool report archive preserves contemporaneous details, while the show’s recap summarizes the program.

His family and the 1972 crash
Biden described meeting Neilia and the loss of Neilia and Naomi in the 1972 crash. He credited family support with helping him through bereavement. These recollections, rather than an independently established clinical description of his expression, are the basis for the interview’s emotional framing.

The proposed Trump debate
Asked about debating Donald Trump, Biden said, “I am, somewhere, I don’t know when but I am happy to debate him.” The statement was made during the April 26, 2024 interview and should be read as a remark from that date, not as a current commitment. The wording appears in the contemporaneous pool report; SiriusXM also noted the debate exchange in its recap.
