She did not describe sobriety alone as repairing their relationship.
What Jewel has said about her childhood
In a 2023 interview with PBS’s Firing Line, Jewel described physical abuse by her father and said she left home at 15. She connected his abusive behavior to drinking, trauma and his own abusive upbringing; these are her explanations, not independent diagnoses or a complete account of either person’s life. Read the PBS interview transcript.
ABC News likewise reported Jewel’s account that her father drank to cope with anxiety after her mother left and became abusive. In a 2015 interview about her memoir, CityNews reported that she described physical and verbal abuse and said she and her father had reconciled. ABC News’s account and CityNews’s 2015 report provide those summaries.
How Jewel described their reconciliation
She worked on her own healing
Jewel said she chose to focus on the person she wanted to become rather than wait for her family to change. In the PBS interview, she put it this way: “I chose to learn how to be the best version of myself, to let go of anger and resentment, irrelevant of what my family was doing.” She presented this as her own choice and experience, not a rule that survivors should forgive or resume contact.

Her father got sober and did his own work
Jewel said her father became sober in his sixties and chose to work on himself. She described the result as a meeting between people who had each done healing: “And my dad in his 60s got sober and decided to do that for himself. And so we got to meet as two healed people.” The quote is from her PBS interview.
Her account makes an important distinction: sobriety was part of her father’s change, while their later relationship also involved each person’s own work. She did not say that sobriety by itself repaired the relationship or that reconciliation happened immediately after she left home.
