George Lazenby later said he left James Bond because people around him believed the character was becoming outdated and advised him to pursue youth-oriented films. He also recalled his manager arguing that Westerns could pay well for a much shorter commitment. Those are Lazenby’s retrospective explanations—not independently verified accounts of every conversation or his contract.
What George Lazenby said about leaving Bond
Lazenby played 007 in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the sixth Eon-produced Bond film. During its production, he announced that he would play the part only once. In a 1981 interview, he said that people around him thought Bond was finished and that, to continue as an actor, he should move into youth-oriented films such as Easy Rider. How money and time entered the decision
In a 2019 interview, Lazenby recalled that his manager, Ronan O’Rahilly, compared another Bond commitment with Westerns starring Clint Eastwood. As Lazenby remembered it, O’Rahilly argued that Westerns paid well and took less time to make than a Bond film. Lazenby’s account helps explain how he perceived his options, but it does not independently establish the terms, pay, or schedule of competing offers. Read the 2019 interview.
Did Lazenby turn down an eight-picture contract?
The accounts differ. A question in the 1981 interview refers to an “eight-picture contract”; in 2019, Lazenby said he had signed only a letter of intent. The contract itself is not established by these interviews, so it is safer not to state as settled fact that he walked away from a binding multi-film deal. What can be said is that he chose not to continue as Bond after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

What happened to the film’s reputation?
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was filmed in Switzerland, England, and Portugal from October 1968 to May 1969, and premiered in London on 18 December 1969. Lazenby’s official filmography says its cinema release was less lucrative than You Only Live Twice, its initial reviews were mixed, and its reputation improved later. The site gives no quantified box-office comparison, so this context should not be treated as proof of why Lazenby left. See the official filmography entry.
