Jack Black returned to host Saturday Night Live on April 5, 2025, nearly 20 years after his previous listed hosting episode. The night’s official NBC clips include his musical monologue, the “Goth Kid on Vacation” sketch and “Making Love,” a performance featuring Brandi Carlile.
What Jack Black sang on SNL
Black’s April 5 episode leaned into his musical comedy. The Television Academy’s 2025 music ballot describes the monologue as Aerosmith-style and highlights his performance of “Making Love” with Brandi Carlile. NBC also lists a separate clip titled “Goth Kid on Vacation.”

Elton John and Brandi Carlile were the episode’s musical guests. The Los Angeles Times recap identifies their performances as “Little Richard’s Bible” and “Who Believes in Angels?” The Television Academy ballot says the pair debuted songs from their album.

When Black returned—and what “20 years” means
Black hosted on April 5, 2025. Apple TV lists his previous episode as Season 31, Episode 9, dated December 17, 2005, with a monologue that included a song he wrote for King Kong. That makes “nearly 20 years later” a reasonable description, rather than an exact 20-year interval.

Sources disagree on how many times Black had hosted by the 2025 episode: Peacock calls it his fifth hosting appearance, while the Los Angeles Times calls it his fourth. The discrepancy is not explained in those sources, so it is clearest to describe the April 2025 show as his return without assigning it an unqualified hosting count.
