Jack Black cancelled the remaining Tenacious D tour dates after Kyle Gass made a joke about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during a Sydney show on July 14, 2024. Black said the remark blindsided him and put the band’s future creative plans on hold. That was not a permanent-breakup announcement: Black later said the duo would return when the time felt right, and Gass said in January 2026 that they had reconciled and would return. No return date has been established.
What did Kyle Gass say?
At Tenacious D’s July 14, 2024 performance at the ICC Theatre in Sydney, Black invited Gass to make a birthday wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referring to the attempted assassination at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the previous day. Video of the exchange circulated online. ABC News reported the incident.
Why did Jack Black cancel the tour?
Black said he was blindsided by the comment and rejected political violence. He announced that he no longer felt it was appropriate to continue the tour and that all future creative plans were on hold. CBS News reported Black’s statement.
The cancellation affected the remaining Australian dates as well as planned dates in New Zealand and the United States. ABC News covered the tour cancellation.

Did Tenacious D break up?
There was no confirmed permanent breakup. Black’s July 2024 statement paused future plans but did not declare the band over. In August 2024, he said, “These things take time sometimes,” and that they would be back “when it feels right.” The Los Angeles Times reported his remarks.
