In Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, Isabel Wilkerson argues that caste offers a way to examine the inherited hierarchy beneath racial divisions in the United States. She compares mechanisms of hierarchy in America with caste in India and Nazi Germany—not to claim that their histories are identical, but to show how social ranking can shape power, status and everyday life. The comparison is illuminating, but it is not a comprehensive account of Indian caste.

What Wilkerson means by caste

Wilkerson uses “caste” as a framework for looking beyond individual prejudice or intent to the structures that assign people rank and shape how they are treated. At a Brown University conversation, she described a hierarchy that influences respect, resources and the assumptions people make about others.

Her book argues that caste helps explain the durability of American racial hierarchy: a system can reproduce unequal status through social rules and institutions, even when particular individuals do not intend to uphold it. The book develops this thesis through historical and personal narratives.

How does caste in India compare with race in America?

Wilkerson’s comparison focuses on mechanisms that can sustain inherited social ranking. Her book organizes its framework around eight pillars, including divine will, bloodlines and stigma. These are elements of her analysis, not proof that Indian caste and American racial hierarchy are the same system.

Dimension Wilkerson’s comparative lens Important distinction
Inherited status Both contexts can be examined through the way a person’s assigned social position shapes how others regard and treat them. The categories and histories that establish status differ; the comparison does not make them interchangeable.
Boundaries and marriage Wilkerson’s framework draws attention to boundaries that preserve social rank, including the policing of group membership. The comparison does not establish a detailed, one-to-one account of marriage rules in each society.
Institutions and belief The pillars named by the publisher include divine will, bloodlines and stigma—ways hierarchy may be justified or reinforced. Religious, legal and political histories vary across societies and across time.
Resources and work The lens asks how status affects access to resources and opportunity, not only personal respect. Sociologist Vivek S. Desai argues that Wilkerson gives insufficient attention to material exploitation and political economy in India.
Resistance and change The framework makes visible the human-made boundaries that can be challenged. Desai says histories of resistance in India receive too little attention in the book’s comparison.

The table describes the comparison as an interpretive framework, not as a full account of either society. In particular, caste in India has distinct religious, political and material histories; it is not a single uniform or unchanged system that can be reduced to U.S. racial hierarchy.

What the comparison helps readers see—and what it leaves out

The framework’s strength is its emphasis on structure: it asks how hierarchy persists beyond overt hostility and how social position can shape assumptions, dignity and access to resources. Wilkerson put the possibility of change plainly at a Brown University event on April 1, 2021: “The boundaries we seek to create are false ones. If they were created by human beings, they can be dismantled by human beings.”

In a 2021 review in Population and Development Review, sociologist Vivek S. Desai found Wilkerson compelling on status, power and lived indignity, while arguing that her treatment of Indian caste is incomplete. He points to limited attention to material exploitation, political economy and histories of resistance, and judges some of the analogies more persuasive than others. That critique matters: a comparison can illuminate shared mechanisms without adequately explaining the distinct systems being compared.
