Issa Rae canceled her sold-out event, “An Evening With Issa Rae,” which was scheduled for March 16, 2025, at the Kennedy Center. In an Instagram announcement reported by The Washington Post, Rae said she believed the institution’s direction infringed on its values and that ticket holders would be refunded.
What happened to Issa Rae’s Kennedy Center event?
“An Evening With Issa Rae” was a one-night appearance set for March 16, 2025. The Washington Post described it as sold out. On February 13, Rae announced on Instagram that she was canceling, thanked attendees for selling out the event, and said tickets would be refunded.
Why did Rae say she canceled?
Rae tied her decision to what she viewed as a change in the institution’s values. The Washington Post reported her statement as: “Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue.” This is Rae’s stated view, not an independently established finding about the Kennedy Center.
What changed at the Kennedy Center before the announcement?
According to the Washington Post’s contemporaneous report, the Kennedy Center board’s leadership vote took place the day before Rae’s announcement. The board installed Donald Trump as chair, voted to terminate longtime president Deborah Rutter, and named Richard Grenell interim president. The sequence provides context for Rae’s decision, but does not establish that any single board action was its sole cause.

Were ticket holders refunded?
Rae said tickets would be refunded. The cited contemporaneous report records that promise; it does not independently confirm that refunds were completed.
How does Rae’s cancellation fit later Kennedy Center withdrawals?
A January 20, 2026 retrospective by NPR, republished by OPB, places Rae among a wider group of performers and organizations that later withdrew from Kennedy Center engagements. That broader sequence should not be mistaken for the cause of Rae’s February 2025 decision. The retrospective also describes a separate dispute over a December 2025 board vote to rename the center, noting that Congress had not authorized the change as of its publication.
