Anora is a comedy-drama that moves between romance, screwball comedy, thriller-like tension, and character drama. Its Cinderella-shaped premise creates one set of expectations; the family’s intervention and the realities of class and money unsettle them.
Why Anora fits more than one genre
Sean Baker’s 2024 film follows Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who impulsively marries the son of a wealthy oligarch. When his family learns about the marriage, they come to New York seeking an annulment. That turn changes the story’s direction: a romance-shaped beginning gives way to conflict, comic disorder, and pressure.

The genre labels describe different parts of that experience rather than competing for a single correct answer. The Festival de Cannes calls the film a comedy-drama. The Atlantic describes it as a screwball romantic comedy, a high-octane thriller, and a character study; the Siskel Film Center calls it a comedic variation on a modern Cinderella story and cites a description of it as a romantic dramedy. Together, those readings explain why viewers can recognize several genres in the same film.
What each genre label captures
Romance: the promise of a fairy tale
The marriage initially resembles a Cinderella story: Ani enters the orbit of extraordinary wealth through a sudden relationship. Romance describes that early promise, not a guarantee that the film will follow a conventional love-story arc.

Comedy: farce and awkwardness
The film’s comic energy comes from the absurdity and friction of the situation. The romance’s fairy-tale setup collides with the practical business of a family trying to undo the marriage, creating room for screwball complications as well as discomfort.
Thriller: pursuit and uncertainty
Once the family intervenes, the story acquires a chase-like urgency. The pressure and uncertainty can feel thriller-like, even though the film is not simply a conventional thriller. The tension grows from the characters’ circumstances and the attempt to control what happens next.
Drama: class and consequences
Underneath the tonal shifts is a drama about money, power, and the limits of the fairy tale. The Criterion Collection calls the film an “anti–Cinderella story” that turns class realities inside out. The Associated Press also discusses the transactional and absurd dimensions of the relationships. Those elements give the comedy and tension emotional stakes.
Why the genre shifts matter
The changes in tone are bound to the plot. A sudden marriage makes a fairy-tale reading possible; the family’s attempt to secure an annulment exposes the power imbalance behind that fantasy. The film can therefore be funny and tense without treating either quality as separate from its examination of class and control.

Baker’s comments on representation add context without making Ani stand in for every person in her circumstances. In an Associated Press interview, he said, “I don’t want to say in any way that I ever faced the hardships of an undocumented immigrant or a marginalized sex worker.” The AP also reported that he dedicated the Palme d’Or to “all sex workers, past, present and future.”
