But the record is mixed: directors described serious conflicts, Kilmer said he was demanding about the work rather than difficult as a person, and other collaborators praised working with him. The accounts support a production-by-production answer, not a universal verdict about everyone who worked with him.
Why did Val Kilmer get a reputation for being difficult?
The label was already part of public discussion during Kilmer’s career. Contemporary reporting described conflicts on major films, and Kilmer addressed the criticism himself. The most frequently cited examples are Batman Forever and The Island of Dr. Moreau, though the accounts differ over what happened and why.
The dispute around Batman Forever
In a 1996 TIME profile, director Joel Schumacher called Kilmer difficult and described a confrontation after he challenged Kilmer’s conduct toward an assistant director. Kilmer gave a different account of the tension: he said Schumacher initially would not let him watch his dailies, which Kilmer wanted to see so he could improve his performance. Kilmer also felt the production put more emphasis on selling an image than on acting. These are the two men’s accounts, not an independently settled explanation of the dispute.
A February 1996 Los Angeles Times report quoted an unnamed source calling Kilmer “petulant” and “selfish” and alleging abusive behavior toward people connected with the film. Because the source was unnamed, those remarks should be understood as allegations, not verified findings. The same report included a contrasting account: sources said The Ghost and the Darkness finished under budget and described Kilmer as “a dream to work with.”

The troubled production of The Island of Dr. Moreau
Director John Frankenheimer publicly said he would not work with Kilmer again. A 1997 Virginian-Pilot profile recorded Frankenheimer’s remarks alongside conflicting stories about the production. It also reported Kilmer’s denial that he had deliberately burned a crew member with a cigarette. That allegation should not be presented as established fact.
The film’s difficulties were not limited to one actor. The Associated Press’s 2025 obituary describes a notoriously troubled production, drawing on the 2014 documentary Lost Soul. The production involved wider disruption and conflict, including the removal of original director Richard Stanley. That context makes it misleading to treat Kilmer alone as the cause of what went wrong.
How did Kilmer explain the criticism?
In the 1997 Virginian-Pilot profile, Kilmer said, “Yes, I’m demanding about my work, but only as it pertains to work.” He also called the stories “not true, in my opinion.” His qualification matters: this was Kilmer’s response to the accusations, not an independent resolution of them.
In a later Interview Magazine conversation, Kilmer said he chose roles for particular aspects of acting rather than career considerations, and that he was consequently “mislabeled as someone who was not fun to work with.” He argued that good directors he had worked with had not criticized him. That is his retrospective assessment, rather than proof of a consensus among his collaborators.

His 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, offered another version of how the label took hold. As reproduced by the Associated Press, Kilmer wrote that he had been “deemed difficult and alienated the head of every major studio” while trying to empower directors, actors, and other collaborators to honor a project’s truth and essence. The passage explains how he understood his own approach; it does not independently confirm the motives behind any particular conflict.
What did collaborators say in his favor?
There are clear positive accounts alongside the criticism. In TIME’s profile, Heat director Michael Mann said, “Val gives you nuance piled on nuance,” and added, “I had a spectacular time working with him.” The Saint co-star Elisabeth Shue told the Virginian-Pilot, “He was wonderful to work with,” describing Kilmer as committed, uncompromising, and collaborative.

A Backstage article offers another interpretation of some of the friction. Filmmaker D.J. Caruso suggested Kilmer pushed for more challenging material and deeper character motivations than a director or studio wanted. Producer’s assistant Julie Unger likewise suggested that his willingness to challenge material could be perceived as difficult. These are collaborators’ interpretations; they do not prove that artistic concerns explain every dispute.
What does the documentary Val add?
The 2021 Los Angeles Times report on the documentary Val notes that the film addresses Kilmer’s long-running reputation. Director Ting Poo said the filmmakers aimed to portray conflict as true to Kilmer’s experience rather than editorialize about blame. That describes the documentary’s approach; it is not an independent finding about every disputed incident.
So, was Val Kilmer difficult to work with?
Some colleagues—most notably Schumacher and Frankenheimer—described serious conflicts or said they would not work with him again. Other collaborators, including Mann and Shue, spoke warmly about working with him. Kilmer acknowledged being demanding about his work while rejecting the broader label as a misreading of his priorities.

The fairest conclusion is that Kilmer could be difficult for some people in particular situations, and that his reputation had a real basis in publicly reported conflicts. The available accounts do not establish how often that happened or justify treating the label as a settled description of his character, every production, or every working relationship.
For Kilmer’s own perspective, I’m Your Huckleberry is a useful optional read: it is his 2020 memoir, not independent confirmation of the disputes.
