Harlan Coben’s Lazarus is an ambitious six-episode family mystery that blends grief, cold-case investigation and unexplained experiences. That mix gives it a distinctive, unsettling atmosphere, but it does not make Coben “untouchable”: TechRadar reviewer Jasmine Valentine praised the show’s twists and performances while finding its story confusing and its supernatural and crime elements poorly integrated. It is best approached as a tangled, mood-driven mystery—not a neatly engineered whodunnit.
What is Harlan Coben’s Lazarus about?
Joel Lazarus, played by Sam Claflin, returns home after his father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus (Bill Nighy), dies. Joel’s unsettling experiences and investigations into cold cases draw him into the unresolved murder of his sister Sutton, killed 25 years earlier. The family’s history and the investigation become parts of the same mystery, with grief and the possibility of the supernatural complicating the search for answers.
Amazon’s synopsis opens, “After his father dies by suicide, Joel Lazarus (Claflin) returns home to confront his troubled past.” The series also features Alexandra Roach, David Fynn, Karla Crome and Kate Ashfield. Danny Brocklehurst, whom Amazon describes as a BAFTA winner and Coben collaborator, is among the creative team associated with the series.
Is Lazarus based on a Harlan Coben book?
No. Amazon describes the series as based on “an original story” by Coben; it is not presented as an adaptation of one of his novels. That distinction matters to viewers who know his book adaptations: the show begins with an original television mystery rather than a novel’s plot and structure. Tom’s Guide also noted this difference in its January 29, 2026 ranking of Coben adaptations.

What kind of mystery is it?
A family story with a crime-investigation spine
The case at the center of the show reaches back 25 years, but the emotional starting point is immediate: Joel has returned to a family marked by his father’s death and an old, unsolved murder. The cold cases give Joel something concrete to investigate, while the family’s past supplies personal stakes. The series is therefore not just a puzzle about who committed a crime; it asks how much of the family’s history Joel can trust.
Supernatural uncertainty changes the rules
Unexplained experiences sit alongside the whodunnit elements. That makes the show darker and less grounded than a conventional procedural, but it also creates a structural challenge: viewers may not know whether an unsettling event is a clue, a supernatural intrusion or part of Joel’s troubled perspective. If you enjoy mysteries that keep those possibilities unsettled, the ambiguity can be part of the appeal. If you want each clue to fit a clearly defined investigative logic, it may feel disorienting.

Does the gothic framing fit?
“Gothic” is a useful description of the show’s family secrets, death-haunted atmosphere and uneasy sense that the past is not finished. It is a critical framing, not Amazon’s official genre label. Amazon markets Lazarus as a family mystery and thriller; its regional Prime Video listing in Spanish classifies it as suspenseful, dark and unsettling. That regional page displays a 16+ rating and content advisories, which should not be treated as a universal rating for every market.
TechRadar’s Jasmine Valentine, reviewing the series on October 21, 2025, called it ambitious, unusually bold and visually striking. She also praised the volume of twists and the cast’s ability to make the mystery compelling. Her reservations are just as central to the viewing experience: she found the plot confusing and argued that the supernatural and whodunnit strands do not cohere well. Those are one reviewer’s judgments, not evidence of a broader critical or audience consensus.

Is Lazarus worth watching?
My verdict: It is worth trying if you value atmosphere, bold tonal shifts and a mystery that grows stranger as family history comes into view. It is a less secure recommendation if your main pleasure is following a clean chain of clues toward a satisfying, legible solution. Valentine’s review captures the trade-off: she admired the show’s ambition, twists, visuals and cast, but found the story’s construction hard to follow.
Do not expect the headline’s “untouchable” claim to be a settled verdict on Coben. The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Lazarus takes a distinctive swing, and at least one published review found that its ambition sometimes came at the expense of clarity. Bill Nighy is part of the draw, but Valentine also noted that he appears less than the marketing might lead viewers to expect.
Where can you watch Lazarus?
Amazon says all six episodes stream exclusively on Prime Video. The catalog lists a 2025 first season with six episodes. Availability and membership terms can vary by market and change over time, so check the Prime Video listing in your region for current access details.

Warning: this section discusses major story details. TIME’s Isabella Wandermurem’s October 22, 2025 ending explainer connects Joel’s visions and investigation to his father’s history and the murder of Sutton 25 years earlier. Those strands make the old crime more than a background case: it is tied to the family history Joel is trying to understand. The explanation is spoiler-heavy, so readers who have not watched the series may prefer to stop here.
