Mariska Hargitay said Christopher Meloni’s departure from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit left her devastated. In a 2025 interview, she described the exit as sudden and surprising, said it stemmed from a negotiation, and recalled trying to change the outcome.
What Mariska Hargitay said about Meloni’s departure
Speaking to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Hargitay recalled the shock of losing her co-star. PerthNow reported her words on June 27, 2025: “The entire world was just devastated – it happened very quickly, and it was surprising.” She also said, “It was over a negotiation, and I tried everything I could to fix or change it,” followed by, “He left. I was devastated.” PerthNow’s report and TV Insider’s June 25 account both describe these as retrospective comments about the exit.
“The entire world” is Hargitay’s description of the reaction, not a measured statistic about viewers. Her account makes clear how personally she felt the departure, but it does not establish how audiences broadly responded at the time.
Why did Christopher Meloni leave SVU?
Meloni played Detective Elliot Stabler opposite Hargitay’s Olivia Benson for the show’s first 12 seasons. He left after the season 12 finale in 2011. Hargitay connected the departure to a negotiation and said she tried to fix or change the outcome. The published reports do not provide the full terms or a definitive account of the negotiations, so more specific explanations of what was negotiated are not established by these sources.

Hargitay’s remarks came in 2025, about 14 years after the departure; they are a reflection on what happened, not a statement made at the time.
What happened to Elliot Stabler after he left SVU?
Meloni returned to the franchise in 2021 as Stabler, leading the spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime. He later appeared on SVU again. In September 2026, Variety reported that Hargitay had teased another Stabler appearance around the SVU season 28 premiere. That later update is separate from her 2025 account of his original departure.
