No—learning piano and guitar at the same time is not inherently a bad idea. It can, however, be a demanding start if you are learning both from scratch: each instrument has its own technique, coordination, rhythm and early learning curve. Whether the pairing makes sense depends on how much attention you can give each and what you want to achieve.
Why learning both from scratch can feel demanding
Beginning piano and guitar together means building two sets of physical habits as well as developing broader musical skills. K&M Music Company’s May 19, 2026 advice article describes the combined work of learning posture, tone, rhythm and reading. That is practical teacher-oriented guidance, not a controlled comparison of two-instrument and one-instrument learning.
The instruments also make different demands on your hands and coordination. You may find that a concept such as rhythm carries across, while the movements needed to play a piano passage do not automatically teach your fingers how to fret or pick on guitar. Expect some skills to transfer more readily than others.
When the pairing makes sense
Studying both may be worthwhile when the instruments serve the same musical goal. The K&M advice article points to songwriting, worship music, teaching and popular songs as possible reasons to pair piano and guitar. A Western Sydney University-hosted document, Thinking Across Music Learning, discusses cross-instrument musical understanding, but the available result does not show that simultaneous study speeds up either instrument’s technique.

If you already read music, know some musical terminology or have a dependable practice routine, adding a second instrument may feel more manageable. A Music Learning Center article identifies those as helpful starting points and recommends leaving a break between instrument sessions. These are practical suggestions, not guarantees of progress.
Choose between starting both and adding one later
Think about your available time, your experience, your goal and the feedback you can get—not just whether you are capable of trying both.

| Consideration | Starting piano and guitar together | Focusing on one first |
|---|---|---|
| Practice time | Requires regular attention for each instrument; no source establishes a minimum schedule or ideal split. | Concentrates your available practice on one set of skills. |
| Prior experience | More manageable if you already have reading knowledge or a steady practice habit, according to the Music Learning Center advice. | Useful if both instruments and music study are entirely new to you. |
| Immediate goal | Can suit a goal that specifically uses both instruments, such as songwriting, as described in K&M’s advice. | May suit you if rapid technical development on one instrument is the priority. |
| Lessons or feedback | Consider whether you can get useful guidance on both instruments. | Lets you direct lessons and feedback toward one instrument at a time. |
These are decision aids, not validated predictors of who will succeed. If your schedule is tight or you want faster progress on one instrument, establish a routine on that instrument before adding the other. If playing both is part of the point, accept that progress on each may be more gradual.
A manageable way to begin
- Set a modest goal for each instrument. Choose something achievable, such as learning a simple song or getting comfortable with a basic technique, rather than expecting rapid mastery.
- Give each instrument its own practice block. Keep the sessions distinct; the Music Learning Center article suggests taking a break between them. It does not specify a required break length.
- Start with easy material. A 2023 music-pedagogy publication includes learner reports that easy pieces can help basic technique and rhythm feel more effortless. Its available excerpt also describes an adult piano learner practicing each hand separately before combining them.
- Review after a few weeks. Ask whether you are enjoying both, maintaining a routine and making progress toward your goals. If one keeps getting neglected, reduce the load or temporarily make it your main focus.
No source establishes a universal number of practice minutes, a fixed division of time between piano and guitar, or a proficiency level you must reach before beginning the second instrument. Choose a schedule you can actually sustain.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
The available material supports a cautious practical answer, not a claim that one approach is scientifically faster. The advice sources discuss workload and useful habits, while learner reports and a cross-instrument learning document offer context rather than a direct comparison of people learning piano and guitar simultaneously versus sequentially.
A 2026 Scientific Reports paper in the available results concerns novice marimba players practicing in dyads—alternating physical practice with observing a partner. It does not test learning piano and guitar at once, so its result cannot establish whether studying these two instruments together helps or hinders progress.
