Why did Lady Gaga wear a meat dress?
Gaga wore the meat garment to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. ABC News Australia reported at the time that she said it was intended to make a statement. British Vogue later described the look as a political statement and recounted an explanation associated with equality and opposition to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Those are accounts of Gaga’s stated intent, not a single meaning every viewer must accept.
The dress also invited other readings, including criticism of its use of animal products. The reporting supports describing it as a striking garment with a political explanation from Gaga; it does not make audience interpretation uniform.
What did Lady Gaga say about bulimia and anorexia?
In 2012, as public discussion focused on her weight, Gaga posted the words “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15,” according to the Los Angeles Times report of September 25, 2012. The statement was a disclosure about her own history. It was separate from the later SXSW performance, and should not be described as a stunt.

What happened when Millie Brown vomited on Lady Gaga at SXSW?
At the March 2014 South by Southwest festival in Austin, performance artist Millie Brown drank colored liquid and vomited it onto Gaga during “Swine,” a song covered in reporting in connection with Gaga’s ARTPOP album. The act became controversial because critics connected its imagery to eating disorders.
Why did Demi Lovato criticize the performance?
Lovato objected that the performance glamorized eating disorders. The Guardian reported her criticism, including the phrase “you don’t have to do that.” Her objection was about the message and potential effect of the imagery; the reporting does not establish that the performance caused or encouraged eating disorders.

Gaga defended the piece as artistic expression. In a March 22, 2014 AAP report carried by SBS News, she called it “art in its purest form” and said she had no regrets. TIME’s coverage also reported Brown’s defense of the performance. These are competing perspectives: criticism of the imagery and a defense of its artistic purpose. Neither, by itself, proves a harmful effect or settles how audiences should interpret it.
