Larry David’s April 21, 2025, New York Times essay “My Dinner With Adolf” satirized Bill Maher’s account of dining with President Donald Trump. David imagined a private dinner with Adolf Hitler to challenge the idea that an opponent’s unexpectedly personable behavior in private should soften judgments about that person. The essay does not name Maher, and New York Times deputy opinion editor Patrick Healy said it was not equating Trump with Hitler.

What prompted Larry David’s essay?

On March 31, 2025, Bill Maher dined with Trump and other guests, including Kid Rock, according to The Guardian. On the April 11 episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher described Trump as “gracious” and “much more self-aware than he lets on.” He added: “Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was – I swear to God – absent, at least on this night with this guy.”

David’s essay followed on April 21. Its fictional 1939 dinner with Hitler mirrors the shape of Maher’s account: a person regarded as an adversary appears unexpectedly human in an intimate setting. Maher is not named in the essay, but contemporaneous coverage connected the satire to his remarks, and Healy explained that David had proposed the piece after hearing Maher describe the dinner.

What does “My Dinner With Adolf” argue?

David uses an imagined dinner with Hitler to make the reader confront the gap between a pleasant personal encounter and a person’s public record. The satire’s provocation lies in applying the logic of “he seemed different in person” to Hitler, a figure whose crimes make that reasoning especially jarring. Its target is the temptation to let a cordial evening eclipse broader judgments—not a claim, stated literally, that Trump is Hitler.

How did the Times editor explain the comparison?

Healy, the Times deputy opinion editor, offered this framing in an accompanying explanation, quoted by The Guardian on April 22, 2025: “Larry’s piece is not equating Trump with Hitler. It is about seeing people for who they really are and not losing sight of that.” That is the editor’s account of the essay’s intent. The deliberate invocation of Hitler remains central to its satire, and readers may interpret the analogy differently.

What did Bill Maher say in response?

On Piers Morgan’s program, Maher objected to David’s use of Hitler. As reported by The Guardian on April 25, 2025, he called the comparison “kind of insulting to 6 million dead Jews” and said Hitler should remain in his own place as “the GOAT of evil.” His reference was to Holocaust victims, not a newly measured statistic.

Maher also argued that meeting Trump had not changed his view of him and that reporting how the dinner went was not a sin. He said he considered David a friend and left open the possibility they might be friends again. These were Maher’s responses to the satire, alongside his defense of describing the encounter as he experienced it.
