In an interview with Southern Living, republished by AOL, the actors described how that shared history changes the romance—and how filming among Iceland’s lava caves, glaciers and waterfalls became an adventure of its own.
The Christmas Quest brings former spouses together for a treasure hunt
Hallmark’s synopsis sets the story in Iceland at Christmastime. Chabert plays Stefanie, an archaeologist; Polaha plays Chase, her ex-husband and an expert in ancient Norse languages. The former couple travels there to search for the legendary treasure of the Yule Lads. Hallmark’s official movie page provides the synopsis and cast details.
Why the romance feels different
Rather than introducing two people at the start of a relationship, the film begins with characters who have already been married. Their past gives the reunion emotional history—and unresolved matters to work through.
Chabert told Rebecca Angel Baer that exploring the relationship was interesting because the characters carry “a lot of emotion and baggage” and have “a lot of unresolved matters of the heart.” Polaha described the contrast with a new romance: their “first kiss is long over.” The story, he said, is about reconnecting; when a kiss comes, it has “a different energy.” He added that viewers may relate to a couple with “a journey that’s already been well-traveled together.” Read the interview by Rebecca Angel Baer, republished by AOL on December 1, 2024.

Iceland becomes part of the adventure
The interview says the film was shot entirely on location in Iceland. Chabert called the chance to make it there together an “epic adventure” and “just perfection.” Polaha recalled working in a lava cave, on a glacier and at waterfalls. He said the experience let the cast see places in a way that could feel deeper than a typical tourist visit.
One shoot-day detail gives that account a vivid edge: Chabert recalled being told to hike up a glacier wearing crampons to film dialogue. Polaha explained them informally as “basically like slippers with claws that you can tie on to your shoe.” The interview does not identify a brand or model; this anecdote is not equipment guidance.
