In 2001, he canceled WCW programming on TNT and TBS—a decision that ended the wrestling promotion’s run on those Turner networks, but does not by itself establish that he alone caused WCW to close.
Who was Jamie Kellner?
Kellner was an American television producer and broadcast executive. The Television Academy describes him as Fox’s first president and chief operating officer, the founder of The WB, and the chief executive of Turner Broadcasting. He also created ACME Communications, a group that owned television stations. The Television Academy’s biography records his passing on June 21, 2024.
His career crossed several major phases of U.S. television: helping establish Fox as a broadcast network, creating The WB, and later overseeing Turner properties that included CNN, TNT and TBS. The Los Angeles Times obituary describes his wide-ranging Turner role and his decision to cancel WCW’s programming. Read the Los Angeles Times obituary.
What did Jamie Kellner do to WCW?
In 2001, while leading Turner Broadcasting, Kellner canceled World Championship Wrestling programming on TNT and TBS. WCW had been shown on those networks, so the decision removed its television home there and angered wrestling fans. The Los Angeles Times and wrestling-industry coverage frame this as the concrete action behind the shorthand that Kellner “ended WCW.” F4W/WON’s report also places the cancellation in the context of WCW’s end.

Did Jamie Kellner single-handedly end WCW?
The sourced fact is that Kellner canceled WCW programming on Turner’s TNT and TBS. That ended WCW’s relationship with those networks; it is not the same as proving he alone caused the company’s closure. The available accounts cited here do not lay out a complete corporate and financial history of WCW’s demise, so assigning sole responsibility would go beyond what they establish.
How is Kellner remembered beyond the WCW decision?
Kellner retired from the television business in 2004. The Los Angeles Times reports that he later pursued sailing and golf and became involved in a winery venture. His legacy also includes backing talent and helping shape television networks and programming.
