He also announced plans to adapt Charles Pellegrino’s nonfiction book Ghosts of Hiroshima. The adaptation was announced, but the sources available as of October 8, 2026 do not establish a production schedule or release date.
What did James Cameron say about AI and war?
In an interview reported by The Guardian, Cameron warned about AI being combined with weapons systems, including nuclear weapons and defense counterstrike systems. He said military operations could move faster than ordinary decision-making allows, while people remain fallible and mistakes have brought the world close to dangerous international incidents.
“I do think there’s still a danger of a Terminator-style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defence counterstrike, all that stuff,” Cameron said. He added: “But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war. So I don’t know.”
These are Cameron’s warnings and risk assessment, not a quantified forecast or an established technical consensus about AI’s contribution to nuclear risk. He also described climate degradation, nuclear weapons and superintelligence as three concurrent existential threats. The Associated Press reported that nuclear weapons, machine superintelligence and climate change recur in his work.

Why is Cameron adapting Ghosts of Hiroshima?
Cameron has linked the planned adaptation to the human consequences of nuclear weapons. At an event marking 80 years since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the Nuclear Threat Initiative said Cameron had made a death-bed promise to Tsutomu Yamaguchi to tell his story. In an Associated Press interview, Cameron described the book as a test of empathy and said he wanted to remind audiences what nuclear weapons can do to people.
He also used a historical comparison to convey the scale of the danger. AP quoted Cameron saying: “There were three bombs in 1945. One was used as a test and two against people. There are now 12,000 and they range in power from 100 to over 200 times the energy that was generated at either one of those two bombings.” Those figures and that comparison are Cameron’s statement in the interview, not an independently verified current inventory estimate.

What is the book about?
Ghosts of Hiroshima is a nonfiction book by Charles Pellegrino. Its central story includes Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a naval engineer who survived the Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945, and was in Nagasaki during the second bombing. Blackstone Publishing says the book draws on years of forensic archaeology and interviews with more than two hundred survivors and their families; that description of its research basis is the publisher’s account.

Is the film in production, and when will it come out?
Cameron’s plan to adapt the book was publicly announced, and Blackstone’s page describes it as “soon to be a major motion picture.” That is publisher wording, not confirmation that filming or other production has begun. The cited statements do not establish the project’s current production status, a release date or a final film title as of October 8, 2026.
