Yes. The plant behind the “suicide tree” reference in The White Lotus is based on a real species: Cerbera odollam, commonly called pong-pong. Its seeds contain cardiac glycosides, including cerberin, that can dangerously disrupt heart function. The show’s plant reference is rooted in real toxicology, but the symptoms and timing portrayed should not be treated as a guide to what happens in an actual exposure.
What is the pong-pong tree?
Cerbera odollam is a coastal and wetland tree found in India and parts of Southeast Asia. “Suicide tree” and “pong-pong” are common names associated with the species; the botanical name is the clearest way to identify it. Singapore’s National Parks Board lists the species and notes the toxin cerberin in its seeds. NParks’ botanical profile provides the plant identification.
The Tennessee Poison Center also describes the tree and its toxic seeds. That establishes the real plant behind the show’s reference, but does not independently verify the exact tree shown at the filming location or the production’s botanical materials. Tennessee Poison Center’s plant information
Why is it poisonous?
The seeds contain cardiac glycosides, including cerberin, a compound in the cardenolide class. At a high level, these toxins interfere with processes that help regulate the heart’s electrical activity and electrolyte balance, which can lead to dangerous heart-rhythm problems. The risk is serious, and the effects of a real exposure cannot be predicted from a simple statement about an amount.

How realistic is the show’s portrayal?
In an April 7, 2025 report, TIME summarized toxicologists’ reactions to the third-season storyline. The experts said vomiting and cardiac effects are consistent with the plant’s known toxicity, but described the character’s almost immediate collapse and recovery as unrealistic. In six poison-center cases discussed in the report, symptom onset varied: two people became symptomatic after three hours and one after 15 hours. The same report quotes Indiana University Health medical toxicologist Dr. Mary Wermuth: “Natural things, it’s a roll of the dice.” The point is variability: no one should assume that an exposure is safe because symptoms have not appeared, or that a particular outcome is certain.
What do the historical poisoning figures show?
Published figures about pong-pong poisoning are specific to place and period, not current worldwide estimates. A 2004 paper by Gaillard, Krishnamoorthy, and Bevalot reported that the plant accounted for about 50% of plant-poisoning cases and 10% of all poisoning cases in Kerala, India. TIME also reported more than 500 fatal pong-pong poisoning cases in southwest Kerala between 1989 and 1999, attributing the historical count to research led by Gaillard. That is a reported figure for a defined region and decade, not a current tally. No current global incidence figure is established by these sources.

Contact your local poison center or emergency medical service promptly if someone may have ingested or otherwise been exposed to the plant. Do not wait for symptoms or try to treat the exposure yourself. In the United States, Poison Control lists 1-800-222-1222; use local emergency or poison-center contacts elsewhere.
