James Earl Jones played Thulsa Doom, the charismatic warlord and cult leader in Conan the Barbarian (1982). Whether Doom was “worse” than Darth Vader depends on what kind of menace you mean: Doom rules through visible violence and personal persuasion, while Jones’s contribution to Vader was the voice behind the mask. There is no objective ranking, but the contrast shows two distinct sides of Jones’s screen presence.
What villain did James Earl Jones play in Conan the Barbarian?
Jones played Thulsa Doom, the film’s antagonist. A contemporary Washington Post review published May 8, 1982, identified Jones in the role and described Doom as “a chilling villain of hypnotic evil.” That was the reviewer’s assessment, not a quotation from Jones.
The movie presents Doom as a human-facing authority figure whose influence rests on both force and the ability to draw followers to him. Conan.com’s 2025 retrospective describes the film character as a charismatic cult leader, a version that differs from earlier supernatural conceptions of Doom in Robert E. Howard’s fiction. That distinction matters: the film’s interpretation should not be mistaken for a claim that it reproduces every aspect of Howard’s character.
How is Thulsa Doom’s menace different from Darth Vader’s?
| Dimension | Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian | Darth Vader |
|---|---|---|
| Jones’s performance | Visible, embodied performance as the antagonist. Conan.com’s 2026 retrospective emphasizes the contrast between Jones’s authority and the film’s physically imposing cast. | Voice performance. StarWars.com says Jones was cast to perform Vader’s voice in early 1977 and voiced the role for more than four decades. |
| Source of screen menace | Personal presence, violence, persuasion, and control over followers. | A masked presence and Jones’s voice, which StarWars.com describes as a “menacing baritone.” |
| What the comparison can establish | A distinct kind of threat: Doom’s influence is shown through a visible leader and his followers. | A distinct kind of threat: Vader’s authority is conveyed through the character’s presence and Jones’s voice performance. |
These are differences in characterization and performance, not a common scale for measuring which villain is objectively worse. ABC News’s 2024 retrospective argues that Doom demonstrated Jones could be frightening on screen in person as well as through Vader’s voice; that is a critical interpretation, not a settled verdict.

Why does Jones’s performance make Doom memorable?
Conan.com’s 2026 retrospective frames the casting as a contrast between Jones’s commanding, classically trained acting and a cast that included athletes and bodybuilders. Its interpretation is that Doom’s power is less about physical strength than about seduction and psychological domination, set against Conan’s reliance on steel. That helps explain the role’s particular appeal: Doom can appear dangerous even when the threat is not simply a contest of muscle.
The film gives that idea a concise expression in Doom’s line, “Steel isn’t strong, boy. Flesh is stronger.” It is dialogue spoken by the character in the film, not a statement by Jones about his own role. The line captures Doom’s worldview and the movie’s contrast between physical weapons and the influence a person can exert over others.

Was Thulsa Doom worse than Darth Vader?
If “worse” means more personally manipulative or frightening as a visible leader, Doom has a strong case: the film presents him exercising direct influence over followers as well as using violence. If it means a masked villain whose screen presence is inseparable from an imposing voice, Vader is the more natural comparison. Which one feels worse is a matter of what kind of threat affects a viewer most.
The available evidence supports the comparison, not an objective winner. The Washington Post review shows Doom’s chilling reputation was present at the film’s 1982 release, while later retrospectives connect the role to Jones’s ability to create menace in a very different way from his voice work as Vader. No verified statement from Jones establishes that he considered Doom worse than Vader.
