Secrets of the Bees follows Explorer Bertie Gregory into the world of bees, using specialized cameras to show the architecture and behavior of a hive. National Geographic says the filming opened a rare window into one hive over three years. Cameron is credited as an executive producer; the series is a nature documentary, not a fiction series directed by him.
The documentary also connects close-up observation of bees with scientific questions about how they navigate, learn and solve problems. What does the series say about bee intelligence?
National Geographic’s accompanying feature discusses studies of bee navigation, learning and problem solving, including experiments in which bumblebees learned a string-pulling task by watching demonstrators. The findings concern particular species and experimental conditions; they do not show that all bees share the same abilities or settle the broader question of insect sentience.

The feature contrasts those experiments with an earlier characterization by German scientist Karl von Frisch: “The brain of a bee is the size of a grass seed and is not made for thinking.” It presents that line as a historical view, not a statement of current scientific consensus. In discussing the string-pulling experiment, researcher Lars Chittka called the rapid spread of the learned behavior “pretty spectacular.”
National Geographic also reports that American beekeepers said 55 percent of their colonies had perished over the year ending in April 2025. That figure describes reported losses among American beekeepers, not a global colony-loss rate.
