The connection comes from a different release: a 2013 paper reports that the NES version of Tetris used “Sugar Plum Fairy” from the ballet as one of its themes.
What is the familiar Tetris song?
The tune most commonly associated with Tetris is the Game Boy version’s A-Type music. The Strong National Museum of Play identifies it as Korobeiniki, a 19th-century Russian folksong about a peddler courting a young woman. The Strong National Museum of Play explains the song’s history and its link to the Game Boy game.
It is not a composition by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the composer of The Nutcracker.
Why do people connect Tetris with The Nutcracker?
Some Tetris releases used different music. A 2013 paper in the SBGames proceedings reports that the NES version used “Sugar Plum Fairy,” a piece from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, as a first theme. The paper discusses music in the NES version of Tetris.

Does every Tetris game have the same song?
No single track should be assumed to represent every Tetris release. The documented difference between the Game Boy A-Type music and the NES theme is why it helps to specify the version and theme when asking about “the Tetris song.”
