Kelsey Grammer became emotional on The View on May 15, 2025, while discussing his memoir, Karen: A Brother Remembers. Why he became emotional
Grammer described how, for much of his life, his memory of Karen was bound to the night he saw and identified her body. “I spent my whole life putting Karen in that horrible night,” he said, adding that he “couldn’t let that image go.” TheWrap reported that he became choked up while recalling the experience.
He said that writing the memoir helped him loosen the hold of that memory and recall his sister as she had been in life: “The book helped me do that. And so, now she lives again. And she’s vibrant and alive.” His emotion on the program was part of his account of a particular memory and what writing the book meant to him; it should not be taken as evidence of a broader psychological claim.

What the memoir is about
Karen: A Brother Remembers is both a remembrance of Karen’s life and an account that addresses her murder. Grammer said that, while writing, he read the police report in full for the first time. TheWrap reports that Karen was kidnapped as a teenager, raped and stabbed 42 times; PBS’s May 9, 2025 Firing Line interview says she was killed shortly before her 19th birthday.
In a separate PBS interview published shortly before the View appearance, interviewer Michel Martin framed the memoir as a book about both Karen’s death and who she was to her brother. That is useful context for understanding Grammer’s emphasis on remembering her as a person, rather than reducing her life to the way she died.

Grammer’s purpose in telling her story
Grammer said he wanted the book to help other people remember those they have lost as more than the devastating circumstances of their deaths. In TheWrap’s account, he said, “that they can bring those people back to life, because they are with you always.” His stated aim was remembrance: making room for the person’s life alongside the grief of losing them.
