Lorde says she planned to bring the chest-taping image from “Man of the Year” to the stage before her album Virgin existed. In a Variety interview, she described the moment as vulnerable at first and empowering as the song unfolds—not as a statement about what the act means for anyone else.
What Lorde said about the performance
In an interview published October 23, 2025, Lorde explained that she had imagined the image as part of a live performance long before the album took shape. “It just felt like an image I had never seen, and it felt incredibly vulnerable and powerful to me,” she told Variety.
She said the experience changed as she performed it: “When we started doing it on the tour I realized, whoa, this is actually incredibly vulnerable. And through the course of the song, I become powerful. It empowers me.” She also described feeling “bare in front of these people” and said the image prompts an intake of breath from the audience.
Those are Lorde’s descriptions of her own performance and emotional response. They should not be read as a general explanation of chest binding or taping.

How the moment fits the tour and Virgin
Variety described the UltraSound tour as carrying Virgin’s raw, unadorned approach into arenas. Lorde said she wanted the production to feel plain and intimate, with the audience contributing to the experience. She also discussed showing stage equipment and making clothing changes in view of the crowd in the interview.
Virgin was released in June 2025. The Los Angeles Times linked “Man of the Year” to the album’s exploration of gender and described the song’s video as showing Lorde remove a white T-shirt and bind her chest with strips of duct tape. That video context is distinct from Lorde’s explanation of why she wanted the image onstage.

What audiences saw—and what is not established
A Variety review of Lorde’s Chicago show, published September 21, 2025, reported that she applied silver tape to her chest during “Man of the Year.” The review situated the image within the show’s presentation of Virgin and self-exploration: Variety’s Chicago concert review.
The reported descriptions differ by context: silver tape at the Chicago performance and duct tape in the music video. They do not establish a particular retail product or show that the same material was used in each setting. The performance is not a how-to or a recommendation to imitate it with household tape.
