Contemporary coverage described several images from the day, including the family at the Lincoln Memorial and the siblings on Capitol steps.
What the photos reportedly show
A January 22, 2021 Hollywood Life report described photos Kerstin Emhoff shared on Instagram during the inauguration festivities. The report identifies the following scenes:
- Kerstin with Cole and Ella in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
- Cole and Ella together on the steps of the Capitol.
- Kerstin and Ella outside near the Capitol.
- An inauguration-night video of fireworks.
The report reproduced the captions “Here we go!” and “My babies.” These details are attributed to the article’s account of the Instagram posts; the original posts were not independently verified here.
Who is pictured, and when was the event?
Kerstin Emhoff is the mother of Cole and Ella Emhoff. The Senate’s official record for January 20, 2021 documents the 59th Presidential Inauguration and identifies Cole Mackin Emhoff and Ella Rose Emhoff as children of Douglas Emhoff. It establishes the event and family context, but does not verify the individual social-media images.

A separate Town & Country family explainer also captions Cole and Ella at the 2021 inauguration. Its mention of Ella’s coat is incidental to identifying these photos.
Why the year matters
The photos described above concern the Biden-Harris inauguration on January 20, 2021. They should not be confused with coverage of the January 20, 2025 inauguration. The Associated Press 2025 photo gallery covers Donald Trump’s second inauguration; its mention of Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff does not establish the Kerstin-and-children photo story.
