The relationship belongs to the period when they worked together on Felicity, the television drama that ran from 1998 to 2002. Russell played Felicity Porter and Speedman played Ben Covington. That shared work gives the romance its context, but the fictional relationship between Felicity and Ben is not evidence of the actors’ private timeline.
What the public recollections tell us about their timeline
1998–2002: The Felicity years
The series provides the broad timeframe associated with their relationship, not a confirmed dating start date. In an NPR Fresh Air interview, Russell described the show as taking up four years of her twenties. A 1999 Argonaut article also covered the series and its Felicity-Ben storyline. Neither source establishes when the actors began dating.

During filming: Speedman confirms they dated
Speedman’s 2014 account confirms that the romance happened during the Felicity period. His breakfast anecdote offers a personal recollection, not a precise date range.
At the time of Russell’s short haircut: they were still dating
In a 2017 joint appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Speedman looked back on Russell’s short haircut and said: “We were dating at the time, and I’d been such a disaster of a boyfriend up until then and I knew I had to put on a good show when I was gonna see her new haircut.” Elle’s report of the appearance records his recollection; Russell joked about the haircut but did not elaborate on his description of himself as a boyfriend.

2017: A reunion-era conversation
The actors reminisced together about Felicity, the haircut and their off-screen romance during the appearance. It shows that they were willing to discuss their shared past publicly; it does not establish their private relationship status in 2017.
March 2024: A retrospective discussion
Russell and Speedman revisited friendships formed on the show in a conversation featured on The Ringer’s Dear Felicity page, comparing the experience to college. The page included a “Watch on Hulu” reference in March 2024; that mention does not confirm current streaming availability.

What is not known about their relationship dates
The cited recollections do not provide a reliable, complete start-to-end date range. It is accurate to say that Russell and Speedman dated during the Felicity era and were still dating at the time of Russell’s short haircut, according to Speedman. It is not possible from these accounts to assign a confirmed year to the start or end of the relationship.
The show’s popularity is separate from the couple’s timeline: a 1999 Argonaut article reported that the Felicity premiere drew more than seven million viewers. That is the newspaper’s contemporaneous figure, not an independently verified network statistic, and it says nothing about when the actors dated.
