Kraven the Hunter has a workable dramatic core: Sergei Kravinoff’s struggle with his ruthless father, Nikolai. But the film keeps widening its focus to other villains’ origin stories, and that sprawl weakens the character story it starts with. Whether that makes it a bad watch depends on what you want from a Marvel spin-off: the dated Rotten Tomatoes snapshot shows critics and verified audience raters responded very differently.
What is Kraven the Hunter about?
J.C. Chandor’s 2024 action-thriller is an origin story for Sergei Kravinoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Sony’s official synopsis describes it as “the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be.” Its central conflict is Sergei’s relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff, which Sony frames as a path toward vengeance. Sony Pictures’ official film page is the source for that premise.

The setup gives the film a clear dramatic question: how does a son shaped by a violent father become the feared hunter? The trouble, as the Associated Press review sees it, is that the story does not stay with that question for long.
Why did critics object to the story?
Mark Kennedy’s Associated Press review, published December 11, 2024, argues that the screenplay “attempts to build the backstory of Kraven but soon loses interest,” then brings in origin stories for additional villains. In Kennedy’s reading, those detours distract from what might otherwise have been a meditation on masculinity. That is the reviewer’s interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the filmmakers’ intent.

This is the film’s central structural problem: a father-son conflict can give an action story emotional direction, but it needs room to develop. When the movie divides attention among several villain backstories, the main character’s arc risks feeling less like the point of the film and more like one item in a franchise checklist. Kennedy also criticizes the direction as insufficiently taut and the visual effects, so his objection is not limited to the number of plot threads.
What do critics and audiences think?
As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 15% Tomatometer score from 161 reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter score from more than 2,500 verified ratings. Those are aggregator snapshots, not permanent measures of quality; scores and counts can change. The gap suggests the film landed differently with critics and verified audience raters, but it cannot tell an individual viewer whether they will enjoy it.

Rotten Tomatoes’ current critics consensus reads: “Claiming no trophies with its rote story and shoddy special effects, Kraven the Hunter turns out to be a paper tiger.” That is the site’s consensus statement, not a quotation from one named critic. Kennedy’s AP review is more specific about the narrative issue, and concludes: “Is Kraven a hero or a villain? Who cares? Without Spider-Man, what’s really the point, right?” The line expresses Kennedy’s view of the film’s place in a Spider-Man franchise; it is not a neutral description of the plot.
Is it worth watching?
If you are interested in a dark superhero origin story anchored by a fraught father-son relationship, the premise may be enough to make the film worth trying. If you want a tightly focused character arc or consistently convincing effects, the objections in Kennedy’s review and Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus point to likely frustrations. The available reception figures do not settle that choice: critics were markedly less positive than verified audience raters in the October 8, 2026 snapshot.

Kraven the Hunter opened in U.S. theaters on December 13, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as R-rated and 127 minutes long; the AP review gives the rating descriptors as “strong bloody violence and language.” Chandor directed, and the listed cast includes Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, and Christopher Abbott.

Sony’s U.S. film page lists the movie as available on Blu-ray and Digital and links to Amazon among its retailers. The listing notes that 4K HDR playback requires a compatible 4K HDR television, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and high-speed HDMI 2.0A cables. Check the retailer’s current listing for inventory and edition details, since availability can change.
