Billboard reported that Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show drew 125 complaints to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). That is a reported tally—not an FCC finding that the allegations were true or that broadcast rules were violated.
What is known about the 125 complaints?
Billboard reported the figure in 2025, attributing it to a newly obtained report cited by The Hill. The underlying report is not available here for independent confirmation, so the number should be understood as Billboard’s reported count, not as a tally independently confirmed by the FCC. Billboard’s account is the source for both the count and the complaint examples.
The performance took place in New Orleans on February 9, 2025, during Super Bowl LIX. SZA appeared as a guest. The NFL later reported 133.5 million viewers for the show on its halftime-show page, describing it as the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show at that time. What did people reportedly complain about?
Billboard summarized complaints concerning Lamar’s lyrics, choreography and guest appearances. Its examples included allegations of “provocative dancing,” racism and gang affiliation, as well as objections to language and gestures that complainants said were unsuitable for children. One complaint objected to the racial composition of the performers; another criticized Serena Williams’s brief appearance and dancing. Billboard also reported that the broadcast used a censored version of “Not Like Us,” alongside selections from Lamar’s discography and his album GNX. Lamar was the first solo rapper to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, according to the same report.
Does a complaint count mean the FCC found a violation?
No. The FCC cautions that its consumer-complaint information reflects what complainants submit and states: “The FCC does not verify the facts alleged in these complaints.” The agency’s consumer complaint data page explains that limitation.

A count therefore records reported submissions; by itself, it does not establish that the allegations are accurate, that the broadcast violated a rule, or that the FCC opened an investigation or took enforcement action.
