In a March 6, 2020 interview with Scroll, Kiara Advani called Guilty “edgy, relevant and topical,” describing the Netflix drama as a thriller that engages with gender, sexism, privilege and how women judge one another. Advani plays Nanki, the accused young man’s girlfriend, in director Ruchi Narain’s film.

What Kiara Advani said about Guilty

Advani said she was drawn to the film’s whodunit structure and thriller element. She also saw it as a story about gender, sexism, privilege and “the way women judge other women so harshly.” The full remark, in Udita Jhunjhunwala’s interview for Scroll, published March 6, 2020, was: “I loved the whodunit format and thriller element. It’s edgy, relevant and topical, tackling issues of gender, sexism, privilege and the way women judge other women so harshly.”

The assigned phrase is Advani’s description, not the interview’s displayed headline. Scroll published the conversation under “Kiara Advani on staying grounded: ‘I want to make sure I am still the person I was before all this’.” It is a promotional interview with the actor, so her comments describe her perspective on the film and her role—not an independent assessment of sexual violence or real cases.

Who Nanki is in the film

Guilty is a 2020 drama directed by Ruchi Narain and produced by Dharmatic. Netflix’s official title page describes a college heartthrob accused of rape by a less popular student, while his girlfriend tries to make sense of competing versions of events. Netflix’s 2019 announcement frames the story through the accused man’s musician girlfriend and asks who is “guilty” in such circumstances.

Advani plays Nanki, that girlfriend. She said she liked the premise but found the character far removed from her own experience, and recalled asking Narain why she had been cast. The story’s competing accounts are part of its fictional setup; they should not be treated as evidence about how sexual-assault cases work in real life.

How Advani prepared to play Nanki

Building a look with purpose

Advani described Nanki’s tattoos, piercings and changing hairstyles as deliberate choices that helped shape the character. “There is a reason for every tattoo and every piercing and her changing hairstyles,” she said. To Advani, the look could read as powerful and rebellious while also revealing a more fragile, insecure and under-confident person. Balancing those qualities was one of the role’s challenges.

Workshops and a survivor’s account

Advani credited workshops with acting coach Atul Mongia with helping her find Nanki’s core. She also said her preparation included meeting a rape survivor who shared her journey. That is Advani’s account of her research for the part; it is not a basis for generalizing about survivors’ experiences.

The wider interview context

The conversation also touches on Advani’s career: the uncertainty she felt after her debut, Fugly, the part she played in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, and the effect of later work. She discussed reflecting on privilege during the Guilty workshops, while noting that people can face different problems that are still real. On Kabir Singh, she characterized the film as fictional and as a director’s creative expression. These are her views, not definitive claims about privilege, sexual violence or the real-world effects of fictional portrayals.
