Kathie Lee Gifford says the 1997 episode involving her late husband, Frank Gifford, was painful and took a long time to move past. In a 2026 interview, she also disputed calling it an “affair,” describing it instead as a one-time tryst. That is her characterization; earlier coverage has used the word “affair.”
What did Kathie Lee Gifford say about Frank’s affair?
Entertainment Tonight reported in April 2024 that the 1997 infidelity involved Suzen Johnson, a former flight attendant. ET said Frank and Kathie Lee’s children, Cassidy and Cody, were four and seven when the story broke. Entertainment Tonight’s report describes Gifford’s reflections on the aftermath.
In a July 2026 account of her appearance on the Hang Out with Sean Hannity podcast, Parade quoted Gifford as objecting to the word “affair.” “People call it an affair,” she said. “No, an affair is not a tryst at a hotel one time. At all.” The distinction is Gifford’s own framing, as reported by Parade; it does not change the term used in earlier coverage.
How did she describe the impact on their marriage?
Gifford told ET that the months and years after the story became public were “very painful.” She said the couple struggled for a long time and that Frank understood she would not be exactly as she had been before learning what he had done. “It’s not a bed of roses,” she said. “I mean, we struggled after that for a long time.”

Her account does not present forgiveness as an instant return to the marriage as it had been. Gifford acknowledged the strain and the lasting change, while describing forgiveness as a choice she could live with: “We all make our choices — he [Frank] made a different one than I did and we all live with them. But I can live with the choices I have made if I have truly experienced a deep and abiding forgiveness of that person.”

Parade reported that Gifford described the couple as having had a “great marriage” and “great love life,” and quoted her saying, “He’s my hero.” Her 2026 remarks sit alongside—not in place of—her acknowledgment that the episode hurt her and that rebuilding trust took time.
