Kevin Nash and Triple H were friends behind the scenes before WWE turned that bond into story material. WWE’s retrospectives trace their relationship from the Kliq’s shared road life, through the 1996 Curtain Call, to scripted feuds in 2003 and 2011. Those television conflicts are not proof of private disputes; they show how WWE repeatedly drew on the history between the two men.
How Triple H joined Nash’s circle
In WWE’s account, Nash and Shawn Michaels were close first; Scott Hall and Sean Waltman later joined their circle. A young Hunter Hearst-Helmsley made an impression on Nash and Michaels and was brought into the group, which became known as the Kliq. WWE says the five traveled together and grew close “like brothers.” That is the company’s retrospective description of their bond, not independent access to the men’s private lives. Michaels later recalled how much time they spent together on the road: “I woke up and faced these faces more mornings than I did anybody else’s.” Nash put the intimacy of the group more tersely: “We had five of us. I don’t need more than four friends.” Both comments come from a 2014 WWE roundtable. WWE’s 2014 Curtain Call roundtable
Why the 1996 Curtain Call mattered
At Madison Square Garden in 1996, as Nash and Hall were leaving WWE for WCW, Michaels and Triple H joined them in the ring for a public goodbye. The moment became known as the Curtain Call. It was personal for the group, but it broke wrestling convention: wrestlers were expected to keep their real relationships and identities separate from the fiction of the show.

The participants’ later recollections differ in detail. Michaels said the idea had been discussed earlier, though not recently. Nash recalled speaking with Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson. Hall remembered the group hugging and thinking, “we all made it.” Michaels characterized the gesture as “just friends expressing their care for one another.” These are individual memories, not a single settled account of every conversation around the event. WWE’s retrospective says officials were angered and Triple H received the brunt of the punishment, with his career stalling for several months before he won the Intercontinental Championship in late 1996 and King of the Ring in 1997. That is WWE’s account of the fallout; the later roundtable preserves participants’ memories rather than independently resolving how the consequences played out. WWE’s Kliq history

How the friendship became a 2003 rivalry
Nash returned to WWE in 2003 after a quadriceps injury, during a period when Triple H and Michaels were feuding. WWE’s story put Nash and Triple H on opposite sides: Triple H turned on Nash, and they fought over the World Heavyweight Championship, including in Hell in a Cell. WWE says the two moved past their disagreements and renewed their friendship. The matches were scripted conflict; the account does not establish that the men had a corresponding private falling-out. The Kliq’s gesture after members split
The hand gesture associated with the group became a way to signal their connection after Nash and Hall went to WCW and Triple H and Michaels formed D-Generation X in WWE. In a WWE interview, Nash called the gesture the “Turkish Wolf”; Triple H and others discussed the more familiar “Too Sweet” name. Their accounts present it as a shared sign, not a label with one universally agreed name. WWE’s interview about the gesture

Triple H explained its role in the cross-promotion era: “When everyone went their separate ways — Kevin and Scott formed The nWo and we became DX — it was a way for us to continue to mess with the part of our fan base that understood the behind the scenes.” In that telling, the gesture let fans in on a real connection while the performers appeared in rival groups. In 2011, WWE again framed Nash and Triple H through their prior bond. Nash attacked Triple H, who was then WWE’s chief operating officer, and WWE coverage said Nash had been re-signed at Triple H’s insistence. The story later led to a TLC sledgehammer ladder match. Those are elements of WWE’s on-screen narrative and company coverage, not evidence that every scripted motive reflected a private disagreement. WWE’s 2011 Kliq feature WWE’s Nash profile
Michaels summarized the group’s personal side in WWE’s 2011 feature: “We all just developed a real serious friendship.” Across WWE’s accounts, Nash and Triple H’s story is therefore both a long-running backstage friendship as described by the participants and a relationship the company repeatedly adapted for television.
