The first released images for Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 show returning cast members—but not Kevin Costner. Here, “MIA” describes the contents of the photo selection, not what happens to Costner’s character, John Dutton, in the episodes.
Who appears in the first-look images?
TheWrap’s August 29, 2024 first-look report highlighted images featuring Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty; Finn Little and Cole Hauser; Wes Bentley and Wendy Moniz; and Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, and Luke Grimes. Paramount Network’s official photo archive also lists Season 5 episode stills and identifies performers and characters in images associated with episodes 509, 512, and 513, including Jen Landon as Teeter, Ian Bohen as Ryan, Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom, Ryan Bingham as Walker, and Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton.
TheWrap’s photo roundup is a selection of images, not a complete cast list. The absence of Costner from those released pictures does not establish whether John Dutton appears in the final episodes or what happens to him.
Why was Kevin Costner not in the released photos?
Costner had said he would not continue with Season 5B or beyond. As TheWrap reported, in an Instagram video he said: “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue season five B or into the future.” TheWrap cited scheduling conflicts involving his four-part Western film franchise Horizon as context for his departure.

That departure is a separate matter from the first-look images: the photos show who was included in that particular release, while episode-specific material is needed to establish John Dutton’s fate.

The first half of Season 5 aired from November 2022 to January 2023, TheWrap reported. The Associated Press reported in November 2023 that the final episodes had been delayed until November 2024 after production was affected by that year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes: AP’s report on the delay.
