Kevin Smith’s Dogma, the 1999 religious satire that spent years difficult to find through legal home-video and streaming channels, returned to theaters beginning June 5, 2025. The limited rerelease was billed as a 25th-anniversary event, and Smith also announced plans for a 4K SteelBook; that announcement does not confirm the edition’s current availability.
What is Dogma about?
Smith’s 1999 film follows two fallen angels trying to return to Heaven, an attempt that threatens humanity. The filmmaker described the movie as “a love letter to spirituality” in a 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times. That is Smith’s interpretation of the film, whose irreverent religious satire also made it controversial.

When did Dogma come back to theaters?
The limited theatrical return began June 5, 2025, after Smith announced it in a verified Reddit AMA. TheWrap and the Los Angeles Times described the rerelease as a 25th-anniversary event, although the film’s 25th anniversary fell in 2024. The Los Angeles Times reported that the rerelease played across 1,500 AMC screens.
Smith also recalled receiving 400,000 pieces of hate mail over the film, according to the Los Angeles Times. That number is Smith’s account, not an independently audited count.

Why was Dogma out of print?
TheWrap traced the film’s difficult-to-follow rights history to separate distribution arrangements: Lionsgate held theatrical rights, while Sony held home-video rights for a limited period. TheWrap reported that Harvey Weinstein later retained control and that Dogma had been out of print and unavailable to stream legally for years. This describes a prolonged gap in ordinary legal home-video and streaming access, not proof that the film had never been available in any format.
Producer Alessandra Williams helped acquire the film and organize its return, according to TheWrap and the Los Angeles Times. The rights story helps explain why the theatrical comeback mattered to viewers who had struggled to find the film through legal channels.

Is Dogma getting a 4K SteelBook?
Yes, Smith said in his June 2025 verified AMA that a 4K SteelBook was planned while the home-video deal was being completed. He also said the edition would include material omitted from the Cannes cut. These were plans announced by Smith, not confirmation of a release date, final specifications, price, or present retail stock. The available announcement therefore does not establish that the SteelBook can be bought now.
