Kevin Costner said he named his son Hayes after Hayes Ellison, the character he plays in Horizon: An American Saga. Hayes was reported to be 15 when Costner shared the explanation at CinemaCon in April 2024; that age is historical, not a statement of his age today.
Why did Kevin Costner name his son Hayes?
“I named him after the character I play in this. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison,” Costner told Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. ABC News reported the same explanation the following day.
The connection is direct: Hayes Costner’s name came from the role his father plays, rather than simply sharing a name by coincidence.
Who is Hayes Ellison in Horizon: An American Saga?
Hayes Ellison is Costner’s character in the film. The official Cannes background document lists Costner as Hayes Ellison and describes the character as a loner seeking respite in a dangerous world.

How old was Hayes when the story was reported?
Entertainment Tonight and ABC News described Hayes as 15 in their April 2024 coverage. That figure refers to his age at the time of those reports; the cited coverage does not establish his current age.
Did Hayes Costner act in the film?
Yes. Horizon: An American Saga marked Hayes’s acting debut. Costner told Entertainment Tonight that his son had a small part, that he thought Hayes could handle it, and that he wanted him close. ET also reported that Hayes did not audition; ABC News likewise said he did not audition.

Why did the film take so long to make?
Costner told Entertainment Tonight that he had started working on the project in the late 1980s and that it took more than three decades to reach the screen. As he watched his son grow up, Costner said, “Man, I better get with it and make this movie.” The comment links the film’s long gestation to a personal milestone, without suggesting that Hayes’s casting was the reason the project began.
An Associated Press interview with Costner at Cannes in May 2024 offers additional context on the project and his son’s appearance in it. Its release dates describe plans reported at that time, not current availability information.
