Instead, fashion publications have assembled year-specific roundups and reported or estimated prices for selected garments and outfits. Their lists cover different periods and may count accessories as part of an ensemble, making a single all-time ranking misleading.
The figures below should be read as historical publication reports, not verified transaction prices or current retail prices. A custom wedding-gown estimate is also not directly comparable with the cost of a complete outfit from one year.

What year-specific roundups add
2016: expensive pieces from several labels
ELLE’s 2016 roundup highlights pricier pieces by Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham and Catherine Walker. It is useful evidence of costly looks in that particular year, but it does not establish a comparable all-time total or a complete wardrobe inventory. Read ELLE’s 2016 roundup.

How to read claims about her “most expensive” clothes
- Check the scope: a custom gown, one garment, and a full ensemble are different comparisons.
- Keep the date attached: note both the year the outfit was worn and the year the publication reported its price.
- Preserve the price basis: describe figures as reported prices or estimates, not confirmed amounts paid.
