On January 17, 2024, the Palace announcements concerned two different health matters: Catherine, Princess of Wales, was recovering from planned abdominal surgery, while King Charles was to receive treatment for benign prostate enlargement. Neither announcement was a cancer diagnosis. Charles’s cancer was disclosed on February 5, and Catherine announced on March 22 that post-operative tests had found cancer. By January 2025, Catherine had reported that she was in remission; the public statements cited here did not name either person’s cancer type.
What the January 2024 announcements actually said
Catherine underwent planned abdominal surgery at the London Clinic on January 16. Kensington Palace announced the operation the following day, describing it as successful and saying she was expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days. The statement said her condition was not cancer-related and that she would not return to duties until after Easter. Her last public appearance before the operation had been at the royal family’s Christmas service at Sandringham on December 25, 2023. Kensington Palace’s statement set out the expected recovery period.
On January 17, Buckingham Palace separately announced that Charles would receive treatment for benign prostate enlargement. The two announcements shared a date, not a diagnosis. Charles underwent the prostate procedure between January 26 and 29; both he and Catherine had left hospital by January 29, with Catherine returning home to Windsor to recover.
When cancer was disclosed—and what was not shared
Charles: February 5, 2024
On February 5, Buckingham Palace said tests had identified a form of cancer during Charles’s prostate procedure. The announcement did not name the cancer type. It said he would receive regular treatment and pause public-facing duties while continuing state business and paperwork. The Palace described a cancer finding separate from the benign prostate enlargement; it did not say he had prostate cancer. The Palace’s February statement is the basis for what can be said publicly about the diagnosis at that point.

Catherine: March 22, 2024
On March 22, Catherine said tests after her surgery had found cancer and that her medical team had advised preventative chemotherapy. She did not disclose the cancer type. In her video statement, she explained: “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.” ABC News reproduced the statement.
The January and March accounts are not contradictory: the initial assessment was that Catherine’s condition was non-cancerous, while later tests after the operation found cancer. The public information does not establish a cancer type for either Catherine or Charles.

What changed through the first year
| Date | Public update |
|---|---|
| April 26, 2024 | The Royal Family said Charles would shortly resume public-facing duties after treatment and recuperation. The statement described a return to duties, not the end of treatment or a declaration of cure. Royal Family update. |
| September 2024 | Catherine said she had completed chemotherapy, while emphasizing that healing and full recovery would take time. ABC News reported her update. |
| January 14, 2025 | Catherine said she was in remission in a message accompanying her visit to the Royal Marsden, where ABC reported she had been treated. “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery.” ABC News reported the announcement. |
What the anniversary does—and does not—tell us
The January 17, 2025 anniversary marks a year since the hospital-related announcements, not a year since two cancer diagnoses. Those came later: Charles’s on February 5 and Catherine’s on March 22. The sequence matters because the original public statements addressed different conditions and because later updates supplied different information about treatment and recovery.
The cited public record does not establish Charles’s precise treatment status as of October 8, 2026. His April 2024 return to public-facing duties cannot be treated as evidence that treatment ended. Nor do the available announcements support comparing the two people’s prognosis or treatment outcomes. Their cancer types remained undisclosed in the statements described here.

Why the March photograph became part of the story
In March 2024, Kensington Palace released a family photograph for UK Mother’s Day. News agencies later withdrew it over concerns about editing, and Catherine apologized for confusion caused by the image. That episode became a communications issue during her private recovery, but it does not explain or replace what was known about her health; the subsequent March 22 statement provided the direct update about the post-operative cancer finding.
