Kendall Jenner wore a custom skirt suit by British designer Torishéju Dumi to the 2025 Met Gala. Its sculpted waist and elongated silhouette took inspiration from Gladys Bentley, the queer Harlem Renaissance singer and pianist known for making menswear her own. The suit was a contemporary interpretation—not a recreation of Bentley’s signature white suit, top hat, and cane.
Who designed Kendall Jenner’s 2025 Met Gala suit?
Torishéju Dumi, an independent British designer, created the custom two-piece skirt suit. Vogue reported that Jenner wanted a minimal, tailored look and hoped to work with a new, young designer. Her stylist, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, introduced the two.
The look appeared at the 2025 gala alongside the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Vogue’s preview describes the exhibition as an exploration of more than 300 years of Black style and identity through the figure of the dandy, including questions of race, gender, class, and sexuality. In that context, Black dandyism is not simply a matter of dress: it can express power and agency.
Why Gladys Bentley inspired the look
Vogue identified Bentley as the suit’s central historical inspiration. A queer nightclub singer and pianist, Bentley was associated with a three-piece suit she wore while performing at Harry Hansberry’s Clam House, a gay speakeasy during the Harlem Renaissance. She was also often pictured in a white suit with a top hat and cane.

Dumi drew on Bentley’s history with menswear and her self-possession rather than copying that familiar outfit. “She had a really strong sense of self,” Dumi told Vogue. The reference is therefore about the force of Bentley’s personal style, not a claim that Jenner’s garment reproduces a documented 1920s suit or speaks for every woman of the Harlem Renaissance.
How the suit creates its waist-cinching shape
Vogue described the suit as having a nipped-in waist, an elongated torso, and exaggerated curves. Jenner called the two-piece skirt look elongated and sculptural; its drama came from the cut and silhouette rather than color. Dumi said she wanted the result to feel feminine, powerful, and sensual without being overly revealing. Jenner also remarked, “I feel like that’s just encouraging close attention to the precision and the tailoring.”

The construction brought together more than one design reference. Dumi connected the blazer’s wrap and shoulder details to Nigerian Lapa shirts shaped by British tailoring, and linked the close-fitting skirt to wrap skirts worn by Nigerian women. These influences sit alongside the Bentley reference; the look is not only a nod to Harlem Renaissance menswear.
What went into making the custom garment?
Vogue reported that the suit used nearly 100 feet of deadstock fabric and took more than 242 hours to make. Those figures refer to this particular custom garment, not a general measure of tailoring time or fabric use. Dumi described her approach to using the material at hand this way: “It’s all about using what you have.”
