Karl Urban plays Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II, the 2026 sequel directed by Simon McQuoid. The trailer presents Cage as a wise-cracking, reluctant recruit: a former action star who insists, “I’m an actor,” when asked to join a fight that threatens Earthrealm.
Who is Karl Urban playing in Mortal Kombat II?
Urban plays Johnny Cage, the actor-turned-fighter who joins the returning champions. The official film site identifies Urban in the role and describes Cage as a new addition to the group facing Shao Kahn.
The “wise-cracking” description is supported by the character’s trailer portrayal, not presented as an official character label. In Ars Technica’s July 17, 2025 trailer coverage, Jennifer Ouellette describes Cage as a washed-up 1990s action star whose career has fallen out of fashion. The article recounts his protest that he has no superhuman abilities: “I’m not some champion. I don’t have Transformer arms or shoot lightning bolts. I’m an actor.” That is the publication’s account of trailer dialogue, not a transcript of the complete film.
What is Mortal Kombat II about?
The official synopsis says the fan-favorite champions are joined by Cage for a “no-holds barred, gory battle” to end Shao Kahn’s dark rule, which threatens Earthrealm and its defenders. It sets up a contrast between Cage’s ordinary human identity as an actor and the supernatural stakes of the conflict.

That connection provides the bridge from the first film’s closing setup to Cage’s arrival among the champions.
Who made the film, and who else is in the cast?
Simon McQuoid returns as director, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. The film is based on the Mortal Kombat video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, according to the official movie site.

What Karl Urban says about Johnny Cage
In a May 6, 2026 interview with Nick L’Barrow for Novastream, Urban described Cage’s starting point in the story: “Well, it’s very much so the case for Johnny Cage where at the beginning of the movie, you meet him as a very broken man. He’s literally at rock bottom.” The remark adds context to the trailer’s comic bravado: Cage’s jokes and reluctance sit alongside a character beginning from a low point.
