Spoilers for episode 7, “Kaiju No. 9.” The episode turns its humanoid kaiju from an unsettling mystery into an active, calculating enemy: No. 9 isolates Reno and Iharu, withstands Kafka’s counterattack, and escapes the Defense Force. Then Hoshina finds Kafka still transformed, putting Kafka’s secret in immediate danger.
How No. 9 turns a rescue mission into a trap
Episode 7 begins with Reno and Iharu facing a powerful humanoid kaiju who quickly overwhelms them. The official episode synopsis puts Reno’s effort to protect Iharu at the center of the encounter; the Japanese synopsis adds that Reno draws on information Kikoru shared after her earlier fight with the same enemy.
No. 9’s intelligence makes the fight feel different from a simple contest of strength. In Crunchyroll’s recap, No. 9 isolates the area and seeks to capture a living officer for study. Reno and Iharu are not just in the wrong place at the wrong time: they are targets of an enemy with a plan.
Reno and Iharu find strength in fighting together
Reno tries to live up to Kafka’s example by protecting his partner, but Iharu does not remain a passive rescue case. Frustrated at being the one shielded, he turns back to help Reno. Their choice to stand together gives the episode its emotional counterweight to No. 9’s calculated attack.

The partnership also keeps the action grounded. The rookies cannot simply overpower No. 9, so their resolve is measured in whether they keep supporting one another as the situation worsens. That shift—from one protecting the other to both taking part in the fight—makes their struggle matter even before Kafka arrives.
Kafka wins the exchange, but No. 9 survives
Kafka’s arrival in Kaiju No. 8 form delivers the episode’s major action payoff. He gains the upper hand against No. 9, but the apparent advantage does not become a victory: No. 9 regenerates and escapes as other officers reach the scene, according to Crunchyroll’s recap.

That escape is the episode’s clearest demonstration of why No. 9 matters. The enemy can endure a direct clash with Kaiju No. 8 and remain at large. Kafka can save the rookies, but he cannot close the larger threat. The sequence gives viewers the spectacle of a powerful counterattack without pretending the danger has been settled.
Hoshina’s arrival creates a personal cliffhanger
After the fight, Hoshina finds Kafka in kaiju form. The final beat redirects the suspense: the question is no longer only whether the Defense Force can stop No. 9, but whether Kafka can keep his identity hidden from its vice-captain. No. 9’s escape leaves a military threat unresolved; Hoshina’s discovery makes the consequences immediate for Kafka himself.
