Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler reportedly split around the end of 2024, after more than three years together. The breakup was reported on January 7, 2025, with follow-up coverage citing People; neither actor publicly explained the separation in the contemporaneous reports.
When did Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler break up?
TMZ reported on January 7, 2025, citing sources close to the pair, that Gerber and Butler had privately split around the end of 2024. Follow-up coverage cited People as confirming the news. The reports describe an approximate timeline, not a date announced by either actor. ELLE’s timeline and Glamour’s timeline also place the reported breakup at the end of the year.
How long were they together?
They were first romantically linked in December 2021, making “more than three years” consistent with the reported end-of-2024 split. Their relationship became more visible publicly in May 2022 around the Met Gala. Gerber attended Butler’s Dune: Part Two London premiere events in February 2024. The latest joint sighting cited in ELLE’s timeline was October 5, 2024, when they were photographed after dinner and at a Gracie Abrams concert in New York.
Was a reason for the breakup confirmed?
No definitive reason was established in the contemporaneous coverage, and neither actor publicly explained the split in the reports reviewed. TMZ’s unnamed sources described the relationship as having “simply ran its course” after about three years and said there was no major drama. Those are anonymous-source characterizations, not statements from Gerber or Butler. ELLE’s explainer reproduced that account.

What have Gerber and Butler said publicly?
The reports did not cite a public breakup announcement or explanation from either actor. Gerber had spoken earlier about keeping parts of her life private. In a February 2024 interview with WSJ Magazine, quoted by ELLE, she said: “Honestly, I feel like so few things in my life are private, and that is one of the things that I try to keep as sacred as possible.” That comment concerned privacy generally, not her relationship or its ending.
