The live-action Lilo & Stitch is no longer an upcoming summer release: it opened in U.S. theaters on May 23, 2025, and in Japan on June 6, 2025. Disney first revealed the live-action Stitch design at D23 in Anaheim on August 9, 2024. The film reimagines the 2002 animated story of a Hawaiian girl and the alien she adopts.
When was Stitch’s first look revealed?
Disney says the first look at the live-action Stitch design was revealed at D23 in Anaheim on August 9, 2024. Disney Japan described the character design as CGI-created. The reveal was a look at Stitch, rather than a full account of the film’s plot or cast. Disney Japan’s announcement recounts the reveal.
When did the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie come out?
Release dates varied by territory: Disney announced a U.S. theatrical opening on May 23, 2025, while Disney Japan lists June 6, 2025, as the Japanese opening date. The “summer 2025” wording was accurate as an announcement in 2024, but those dates have passed. Disney’s May 27, 2025 announcement gives the U.S. date; Disney Japan gives the Japan date.
What is the live-action film about?
Disney describes the movie as a live-action reimagining of its 2002 animated classic. Lilo is a lonely girl in Hawaiʻi who adopts Stitch, an alien; the story centers on the bond they form and the meaning of family. Disney’s film announcement provides the official synopsis.
