Japanese composer and pianist Yoko Shimomura received the BAFTA Fellowship at the 21st BAFTA Games Awards on 8 April 2025. BAFTA announced the honour on 31 March, describing the Fellowship as its most prestigious honour and recognizing an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television.
What the BAFTA Fellowship recognizes
BAFTA calls the Fellowship its most prestigious honour. It recognizes an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. Shimomura received it for her contribution to the games industry. BAFTA’s announcement described her music as having been enjoyed by millions of players worldwide, but did not provide a measured audience figure.
Why Yoko Shimomura’s work stands out
Shimomura’s credits span arcade-era fighting games, role-playing series and orchestral game scores. BAFTA’s representative list includes Street Fighter II, the Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy XV, Super Mario RPG, the Mana series, Mario & Luigi, Xenoblade Chronicles, Live A Live, Radiant Historia, Parasite Eve and Breath of Fire. What Shimomura and BAFTA said
In BAFTA’s announcement, Shimomura said she was “absolutely delighted” to receive the award, while acknowledging that she could hardly believe it. She credited the people who supported her and made it possible to continue creating music and working in games, and expressed gratitude to the industry, the people who commission her music and its listeners.
BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip called Shimomura a pioneer of video game music and said her work had helped pave the way for women in an industry that was overwhelmingly male-dominated when she began. Millichip also said Shimomura’s soundtracks had inspired artists and would continue to resonate across generations. Both statements appear in BAFTA’s announcement.
