Jojo Todynho posed with former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro at a Partido Liberal (PL) event on September 13, 2024, and publicly supported Alexandre Ramagem, the party’s candidate for mayor of Rio de Janeiro. Two days later, Jojo described herself as Black and right-wing and said she felt free to speak openly about her politics. The photo documented an appearance together; it did not, by itself, make Jojo a formal campaign representative or a candidate.
What happened at the PL event
Contemporaneous reporting by Terra on September 15, 2024 says Jojo took the photo with Michelle Bolsonaro at a PL event on Friday, September 13. Jojo also declared support for Alexandre Ramagem, the PL candidate in Rio de Janeiro’s 2024 mayoral election. The report says she backed PL city-council candidate João Marcello Branco as well and criticized then-mayor Eduardo Paes.
The event, the endorsement, and Jojo’s later explanations are related, but distinct: appearing with Michelle was not itself an announcement of a candidacy or a formal campaign appointment.
What Jojo said about her politics
On September 15, Jojo addressed her political stance in remarks on Instagram quoted by Terra: “Me respeita. Sou preta, sim, e sou de direita. Sabe como estou me sentindo? Livre. Não aguentava mais não poder falar.” In English: “Respect me. I am Black, yes, and I am right-wing. Do you know how I feel? Free. I couldn’t stand not being able to speak anymore.” This translation is for clarity; the original statement was in Portuguese.

Her explanation presented the endorsement as a matter of personal political choice. It should not be read as evidence that every person in her audience, or any broader community associated with her music, shared that position.
Why the photo drew criticism
Coverage described criticism from some followers and members of the LGBTQ+ community, in the context of Jojo’s earlier association with LGBTQ+ audiences and music. That account does not mean the response was unanimous, nor does a political disagreement establish that she had “left” or “broken with” a community.

The issue was also discussed alongside her announced intention at the time to seek removal of her song “Arrasou, Viado” from platforms. That was an intention she stated; it does not establish that the track was removed everywhere.
How Jojo answered the backlash
In a November 2024 interview on Deborah Albuquerque’s podcast, reported by UOL/Splash on November 4, Jojo defended taking the photo and challenged the idea that race or class should determine her political views. She said: “Eu tenho liberdade [para isso]. Se as pessoas tiram foto com a Janja, por que não posso tirar com a Michelle? Qual o problema?” In English: “I have the freedom [to do that]. If people take photos with Janja, why can’t I take one with Michelle? What’s the problem?”

Because I’m Black or because I’m from a favela, do I have to be left-wing? Where did you get the idea that poor people, Black people, and people from favelas have to be left-wing? I am whatever I want to be.”

The 2024 reporting establishes a public endorsement, not a formal campaign role or candidacy. In 2024, Jojo said she might run in 2026. A PlatôBR report dated March 22, 2026 later described Michelle as encouraging a possible candidacy in Rio. That report does not establish that Jojo filed to run or received a PL nomination. Interest in a possible run should therefore be kept separate from a confirmed candidacy.
